Garmin questions

Just did 94L with it set to alert every 4L.
It definitely went off a few times, maybe 5/6, not sure if it didn’t go off the rest of the time or it’s just too subtle to detect whilst swimming.
I did 350m warm up of continuous FC and didn’t feel or hear it once.
We then did some sculling drills and it went off a couple of times part way up a length.
We then did a mixture of 100s and 200s and it went off a few times at the end of the 100s but only 2/3 and didn’t feel it at all during the 200s.
My conclusion would be that it’s pretty useless as it was either working very intermittently or it’s just too weak to feel whilst swimming anyway.

Thanks for testing. Yep, unless it definately goes off it’s a pretty useless alert.

I’ve used it a lot on my watch… on pretty much every swim for the last 18 months.

IMO, I’ve come to conclude that it always goes off, but the beep or vibration are not very obvious, so its really easy to miss it if for example it vibrates while you are recovering your arm or pushing off the wall and the water is a bit more disturbed than otherwise.

Well I was looking out for the alert. But maybe mines knackered too

When you send yours back, do you keep the original boxes and stuff?

I’m terrible at returning things, i just never get around to it. But another barrier is we don’t have much space in our house, so packaging is the first thing to get recycled.

I’m not sure if i have a problem with my 245 or not. When it’s on normal mode, it actually emits a lot of light. You can’t see it in the day (it looks like the backlight is off) but in the dark, in bed it’s positively glowing. is this normal for the newer watches?

Send only the watch back, sent mine just in a jiffy bag.

Silly question, but do you have the backlight set to “always on”, or equivalent? The 945 that I have recently bought, so released at the same time, is nothing like that. Can you spot an increase in light output when you press the top left button (even in daylight I can spot the backlight going from off, to on, if I cup my hand over the watch). If not, then I would think your backlight is constantly on, which must haemorrhage battery?!

No i don’t have the backlight on, there’s a definite brightening when i hit that button. But i’m just surprised at the amount of light that is emitted from the standard mode. It reflects off my pillow at night. I can see the watch face in pitch black without hitting the ‘light’ button. On my old ones, i wouldn’t have been able to see a thing until i lit it up. Does that make sense?

I really wish Polar would up their game; they could take a lot of business off Garmin if they made their devices fully compatible with other sensors and had the full suite of swim functions on the premium multisport watches.

In that case, it sounds like something is going wrong. My screen is pitch black in the dark, and I wouldnt be able to make out a thing unless I hit the light button

Cheers dude.

So, next dummy question … who do i contact - Garmin or the random place i bought it from?! Obvs i don’t want ot be without it for too long, or my training won’t count!

Luckily I have my old 735XT; although suspect I’ll have to give it up tomorrow as my wife has gotten used to having it for runs.

I’d contact Garmin support in the first instance, just to get them to check if something is going awry. But if they agree it is, and it’s within warranty, they’ll get you to deal with the shop from my experience. It’s the out of warranty stuff that they’ve always dealt with me directly on.

Yeah i’ve just dug out the old emails and found out where it came from. They claim a 2yr manufacturer’s warranty for all products on their site, all processed by themselves.

But as it’s not an immediate issue, i think i’ll chat with Garmin first. Just need to articulate it a little better!

Contact Garmin support, before they ask you to send it back they will want you to have uploaded the latest firmware via Garmin express (not from Connect) & done a hard reset so might as well do those things first.

Out of the box my 735 had many issues that were fixed with the hard reset.

I will just check the Polar Vantage software updates before I buy yet another Garmin :grimacing:

Have to say, I’m happy with my 935. Elevation is sometimes off but I rarely care about that. In the end doesn’t matter what the watch says, you still hauled your carcass up the mountain!

Very true. We should ditch all this software shite and go back to written diaries/half joking

That’s exactly how I do it. Not diary but manually entered into a XLS
