Garmin questions

It wasnt the strap that broke it was the arm the strap fits to the main body of watch

That is odd. Were you trying to garrote someone with it?

no i went to unfasten it after a run and it just fell off with body of watch ?

maybe the G force from speed of running

Can anyone point me at the difference between Garmin 530 and 830 and whether there are any features on the 830 which are a must have over 530. Thinking this will be my birthday present as I just use my watch for rides. Get 25% off with Vitality so the prices aren’t too bad.

Main difference is the 830 is a touchscreen (I don’t like) and that the 830 allows navigation by entering an address, whereas the 530 requires selection of a destination on another app or some other avenue. The 530 can re-route, it just doesnt have the full databases of addresses.

I believe they are the two key differences.

I’d imagine that buttons are more useful on a bike computer given that you can use them with gloves on. The address thing doesn’t bother me, I’ll be sticking a route or destination into it before I start or likely to have my phone on me to set it up if needed.

Right, some help please (@stenard !! )

I installed an old Garmin Edge 500 that @Adam very kindly donated to my wife’s new Garmin Connect account; she had previously just used Strava on her phone, but it would drop out and miss chunks of her ride every time.

All set up ok, but there were a bunch of old activities on the device. I couldn’t bulk delete them as my wife went out last weekend. So i went through, painstakingly deleting them one by one … and what did i do? Yep, i deleted her activity from GC and just left the 3sec activity (us testing it in the garden!) :see_no_evil:

I’ve checked it on the device and it’s still there. But when i try to sync it with GC (well Garmin Express to be accurate) it won’t pull the activities through. Assuming it has flagged them in some way as synced.

So, any ideas how i can force the activities back through? I don’t mind having to delete the old ones again. I’ll just be more careful!!!

Finding the Strava sync wasn’t as easy as it used to be either! Though Mrs GB will be disappojnted when she sees the ‘new’ strava!!

Yeah sorry about that @gingerbongo - I couldn’t find anywhere on the device to factory reset. Not sure how many rides I had left on there. Last time I used that edge was 2014 I think!

Is it Strava you want to upload to?

You could have to device connected to your laptop and upload it from the file option?

yeah that’s a good call. Then i can delete them all from the device. Good thinking.

And absoutely no worries, it’s not a problem. 2015 were the last activities!

cheers!

EDIT - perfect. Worked a treat. And now i can delete all the files manually from the device. Thanks (again!)

No worries!

If you plug in to a computer you should be able to find the .fit file for your activity (file name should be date of some kind). You can then go to your Garmin connect account and import the fit file.

Yup, all done.

Yep, as Doka said, the one good thing about most Garmin’s is that they just show up on a computer as a mass storage device. Garmin Express is only really relevant for software updates, and an Edge 500 isn’t going to be having any of those!

So just navigating directly to the activities folder would always be the easiest to bulk delete files, manually upload .fit files to anywhere (Garmin Connect, Strava, etc).

Glad you got there. The Edge 500 was always solid. The fact it now does workout sync from stuff like Training Peaks is really solid. I recall upgrading around the same time I ditched the 910xt … I just got a little tired of using a laptop for everything, mainly as my laptop was crap!

yeah, normally i wouldn’t bother, but it’s free and with this WFH stuff my work laptop is permanently on the kitchen table, so really accessible. I originally just wanted something easy for my wife to see how she’s getting on during her ride that actually records accurately. If i wasn’t here there’s no way she’d be bothered with the faff. But i’ve sorted it all now, and i’ll just do her upload on a Saturday morning.

Think i might get out this evening for an hour or so, so will move it over to my bike. Will be quite novel having it on a screen and not my watch!

Quick 1 min google and common sense suggests there won’t be, but is there any way to link one Garmin device to two accounts?
Eg so my partner could get on turbo and use my edge to record it, but it upload to her Garmin Connect instead of mine.

Are you able to see your 530 as a mass storage device when plugged in?

Could then log into GC desktop and upload through that.

Yeah that’s another option, probably not much difference 667 0lthan downloading the file from my GC and uploading to her account. She’s not bothered on having any record of them, has just jumped on twice for something different rather than running and home circuits.

Sort of a garmin question…

But has anything bought from here before? A mate reckons he’s got a couple of bits (including a fenix) , and they were fine. But I’m casting the net a bit wider.

Assuming half of them are nicked anyway, so probably in decent condition. Just don’t want some serial number to be recalled/blocked or anything weird like that (if those things even exist in this space).

I’ve not looked into Edges before. But an 800 or 820 for 45 quid seems like a worthwhile punt.

You’ll probably be alright - they do have shops on the high street - lots of console games and general electronics. Questionable name though

We’ve traded games and consoles there with my son’s stuff and I recently bought an old PS2 for myself.
You generally pay a bit more than the normal 2nd hand price but you get a guarantee. They’re mainly games consoles and phones so probably aren’t as clued up on Garmins but I wouldn’t have an issue using them.
