Hyrox

Not following the sport; where do you think Hyrox is on it’s bell-curve? Been going a few years now. Is it the natural successor to Crossfit?

It probably depends on when the influencers get bored of it and move on to another physical challenge

Runs around a muddy field with token obstacles all over the shop. Not that hard, but we’ll use lots of words like epic, tough and muddy.

Tough mudd… Oh wait

:joy:

I saw an ad on FB for Spartan the other day. There were blokes in long socks, arm warners but topless. WTF is that all about?

I don’t get the whole running without a shirt thing.

I see guys doing it in all weathers down here.

Mostly it seems to be blokes who are desperate to show off their abs, but often it’s folks who really should keep covered up

I was one of those guys a little while ago; something happened to a t-shirt which seemed to basically turn it into sandpaper. I had to take it off because the nipple chafing was so bad!

100+kg of me is not something anyone wants to see running around!

Probably near ish the top. However it is far better managed than Crossfit. The event offering is in reality done very well and is constantly improving from a product perspective.

I think really the question is what is the bell curve on ‘fitness racing/competitions’ as there are many competitions popping up. Athx is now growing hugely. Deadly Dozen etc. It also helps that this has all coincided with a general booming in running and people focusing on health and fitness in general. You only have to look at the decline in people drinking to see that!

Seems on social media like lots are moving towards completing a triathlon as part of their hybrid athlete status, but that might just be targeted algorithm to me.

By “people” do you mean Gen Zs and Millennials?

There was an article that popped up on my feed the other day about how young people are swapping bars and clubs for running clubs as places to socialise

Sounds like a good plan.

IMHO though, Gen Z & A are living pretty sheltered risk-averse lives. ‘Excitement’ seems to be increasingly lived vicariously via the Internet. It’s actually very easy to shock and ‘offend’ my children; and being a big kid myself, this happens frequently.

No that is definitely the case from what I am also seeing

@Whisk I only have a relative small pool of people but at least on the non/less drinking side of things, I would say its pretty wide spread. Even my parents who are 70+ and were your typical glass of wine or two with dinner most nights have cut down hugely after seeing how much it affected sleep etc and keep it to special occasions now. On the bars and clubs topic I could come at this from multuple different angles but its probably for a different post!

@Jorgan I suppose what is deemed as excitement? I completely agree it shouldn’t be vicariously through the internet however!

I guess some would find a review of the annual budget cycle or watching Bake Off ‘fun’. So yeah.

Still growing .. for sure

Lots of “ this is obviously going to be an Olympic sport soon”

I’m sure I read it’s the fastest growing sport in the world recently but didn’t check the claim out

It’s very “ accessible “ and there are posey pictures .. perfect for today’s world I guess

The guy in the top was outrunning them all :joy: probably lighter weights.

Also saw some woman moaning about a huge queue in her race at London for the wall ball, assuming it was recent?

I did hear they were queues for wall balls at London. I will guess it was due to a lack of wall ball judges but I could be wrong

That sounded like one reason but this person was firmly blaming greed with too many people in her wave :joy:

Correct on lack of judges being put out as the reason, although again like IM I’m sure they’re pushing for as many people per wave as they can get away with.

Photos circulating look like queues were pretty bad ~30 people deep. Think they managed to implement timing system that all waiting time was removed from overall time

It said something like this, but she had to wait about 40 minutes until she got her final result.

Some genuine moans but I think she was probably a bit upset with post-race adrenaline.

Two sides to every story I guess

I lost a podium place ( as best I can work out ) 55-60 at Manchester 2024, with a shocking wall ball time I just can’t do them fatigued ?!?

We’re as other people are 30 secs slower then a stand alone time .. I’m about 3.5 mins ?!

lol

Quite a few examples of this as others have said they are milking it for cash with too many in each wave
