I think some are under the impression it’s ultimately about making an initial investment to leverage a buy-out of WTC; the PTO/Collins Cup thing is just a Trojan Horse and won’t deliver in the long term.
Presumably these cancellations could cause big issues for Ironman and Kona this & next year if they continue, the South Africa race is after Kona 2020 so that’s 40 slots less this year, but then 2 IMSA qualifying races for 2021? and there’s a few more in the USA along with Lanza that could have similar implications.
That pier might be busy next year, unless they stop the loyalty places etc for a year?
Jeff
Challenge Roth just extended withdrawl deadline to end April. Now that’s customer service. Gives me extra time to wait and see what happens with Lanzarote
On a related (side) note I wonder what will happen to Ironman pro fields. Only the top few are in any way ‘wealthy’, for the majority it’s a precarious existence trying to scrabble together the prize money and sponsorship to live, train and race.
I can see both of those incomes taking a dive after this, let alone the pressures of months without race prize money.
They are basically “zero-hour” gig-economy workers, aren’t they?
Freelancers, contractors, etc.
I doubt Ironman in it’s current guise will survive this.
That’s the future for WTC Ironman.
I started out in 1992; there were almost no Ironman events back then, maybe Kona, Roth, NZ & Canada? So I’m kind of
right now. It was all grass-roots stuff for me, no chip timing, and it was great…real racing. The issue will be getting these local events back up & running again.
There was life before big franchise events
But, but my tattoo.
Will i still get life affirming validation?!
I agree, i think this could eventually be great for the sport, the WTC end up in shit, the sport ends up managed not for profit again
I’d agree with you there, too.
I started out doing grass roots events!
1485 duathlon
Forestman
Wolverhampton Classic
Unfortunately, I suspect it’s the ma & pa operations that will be finished by all this, the one asset Ironman has is the brand, and that will still be valuable - perhaps even more so. It might mean more events like Lanzerote where a local organising team licence the Ironman name, and maybe that would not be such a bad thing.
TriTalk man?
For athletes, by athletes!
4/130/30
Featuring the ‘Hammers and Spoons swim leg’, and the ‘watcha watching race briefing’.
Results will be published before the race starts by Slogging Scotsman, and anyone wearing Nike VapourFlys that they paid more than half price for will be an instant DQ.
I propose the entire bike leg is downhill in order that freewheeling will allow saving of legs for run…
120 was Nice iirc
Do some of the newer TTers not know about “TriTalkMan 2008”?
Held at Market Bosworth, out of our car boots.
My first half Ironman training day
About a dozen - two dozen people did it.
I had the hoody until last year.
You can still buy them on spreadshirt. I found them. The date is 2009 so edit that back to the 2008 date and order a new one!
Maybe we could get a TriTalkMan running when this clears up. Have a run out at a nice lake somewhere (or even pool) that allows pay as you go swim and make it multi lap so its easy to follow.
