My prediction for Ironman
Wanda will go out of business if not bailed out by Chinese government. There is no way that they can refinance $5.3bn this year in the current climate.
Ironman will be part of a fire sale, either as part of bankrupcy or as part of restructuring the business
Who will buy Ironman? Financially it will be in a mess due to cancellation and rescheduliung races this year. They will have lost a lot of good will from athletes (read IMJ). On the other hand, many other race operators will also have collapsed, so there could be a massive gap in the market
I am not sure that I am in favor of PTC taking over Ironman. What about Challenge? is this an opportunity to unify Ironman and Challenge events?
I know that a lot of triathletes do not like the way that WTC has taken Ironman, and moved it away from being a sporting competition. But they have been really successful in developing the brand. What comes next remains to be seen. If it is primarily a commercial exercise, I think we will see more of the same
I thought something down the lines of bankruptcy in this country, debts get bought for nothing or written off and someone gets the brand and domain name on the cheap to take forward. Pi$$ off a few but promise a nicer company, and people want to race so most will go back.
That’s a good point about WTC. Foe me it went downhill in the regard when NAS ceased to be the owners.

I’m not sure how they can go back to the franchise model when they’ve taken so many races in-house. They’d have to “sell” the existing races to new organisers, or maybe to the local organising teams.

Yeah, if ‘WTC’ is decimated, then who will stage all these events for them with no staff; I think they’d have to go into licencing the brand again like the 90s/00s. The ‘Ironman’ brand is where the value is; but they have gradually built-up an organisation around that nucleus - but will that now just implode…
I assumed most of the IM staff were temp/seasonal who went round with the travelling circus, with just a few full timers organising (may be wrong mind).
They’ve invested a lot in the kit that schleps round Europe. As a business they’ve had a pile of cash in so far, with far less shelled out on event costs so far as most events are early in the cycle. I would assume they could dig in if 2020 is a complete bust as they are offering deferral/transfer options not money back.
Then get the show rolling again in 2021.
This, of course, ignores the wider Wanda problems and other minor things like complete societal breakdown…

It’s been moved to 21/11 which doesn’t work for me really due to Boston, but they’ve also offered 4 other possibilities.
Defer to Texas 70.3 2021
Swap to 70.3 (2020) Augusta, Waco, North Carolina.
Augusta might work and I’d already looked at it, it’s 2 weeks after Boston, but it depends on holidays from work and of course whether things have died down enough for travel bans to have been lifted.
There’s a possibility I could ask to see if I can upgrade to something like IM Chat as well, maybe, but I’m not sure I CBA with a full and the training, especially after UTMB & Boston in the previous 5 weeks.
Only downside is they need to know before 29th March.
Just need KLM to respond to me now about the flights.

Yes, I suppose 2021 might be a safer bet but don’t think Boston will allow changes but they are asking for feedback.
