Ideas for the future of Ironman

Are you doing it? I’ve increasingly got half an eye on throwing in an entry, have always fancied it and 8 weeks training should be enough for a respectable get round. I’ll be post-nights (finish Friday 9am) but managing deadly dozen ok on the Saturday after a sleep

Otherwise I might try aiming for Big Lime Olympic ± Helvellyn/brutal

Hmm, I’ve entered, but have for the last 3 years and not even started so I’ll leave it at that!

It doesn’t start until 10am and easy to register in the morning so might be a bit better for you than a 6am start like Bolton was.

Closes in about a week though I think, unsure how many slots left.

Edit: the water should be better than Hartlepool marina with the taste of salt and hint of diesel :face_vomiting::joy:

Future of Ironman as no doubt they squeeze in but Challenge Barcelona Half…actually in Barcelona. Looks perfect for Ironman to go run roughshod over.

Been a while since Ironman did the old Pac-man to a challenge event?

Was the last Weymouth? That was after Barcelona / Copenhagen at least.

Makes them look lazy doesn’t it; not very innovative. I guess with traithlon over the peak of the bell curve, there will be less of that.

Just realised it’s 20 years of Ironman Nice this year. Clearly struggling a bit but somehow they’re keeping it going. The 70.3 bike course must be quite dull.

Mixed bag, first\last 15k was on the outskirts of town and through an industrial estate. The climb and rural bit was alright but depending on your descending skills that was hit and miss.

I’m sure it’s had a renaissance because of the WC the last few years.

Will be interesting to hear the reviews…

The spinning medals are in vogue these days.

Not in any issue I’ve seen recently :woman_shrugging:t2:
Mainly A$AP Rocky, Rihanna and Iris Law.

Not Ironman directly but long course Yorkshire didn’t last long, just don’t think it appealed despite it being a quiet location. The locals didn’t want restrictions either, in some ways that’s understandable as there’s very few alternative routes from some places but mostly just nimby’s.

Kona and 70.3 WC qualification changes from next year, quick glance suggests the days of long rolldowns have gone! Haven’t fully read it yet.

A new qualification pathway for the pinnacle events of triathlon :crown:

:chart_increasing: Based on extensive research, testing, and feedback from athletes, this new performance-based qualifying system is designed to reward athletes based entirely on how competitive they are relative to their age group and gender.

:flexed_biceps:t3: Beginning 2026, the Age-Group qualification system will utilize a newly created Kona Standard and IRONMAN 70.3 Standard to generate age-graded finish times to reward the most competitive amateur triathletes striving for IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots.

:hibiscus: World Championship racing opportunities through Legacy, PC/ID Open, IRONMAN Foundation, and other programmatic initiatives will continue to be offered to support further growth in the sport

Actually looks like slots per age group have gone and you’re rewarded by being competitive in yours

yes so an event gets 50 slots 2 are gone, 1 male and 1 female, and the other 48 will go to 40-44 year old males on TRT

It will make the female races more competitive as that 15hr plus finisher isnt getting a slot for coming 19th in AG as no one else took it, but it will go back to having low numbers of women again

50 slots, 24 are gone (every AG winner, from 18-20 to 70-75).
Then they get allocated to the fastest AG (relatively) rather than the biggest AG. Probably not going to change much, still mostly 40-50 year old men.

Is this similar to GFA?

I haven’t completely read it yet but a few thoughts, questions, comments.

I’m not sure it retains the M/F ratio, part of me thinks that if men outnumber women in the qualifying events they should get more at the WC, equally if they’re all in a big pool will that sort it out.

I’m not sure if it says whether this pool will be published throughout the year and then basically decided on 31st July with a subsequent rush for people to book flights & hotels?

I do think that in the male races in particular those in the grey areas that were hopeful of a rolldown might not bother to race? e.g. if you’re in M50 with 3 slots and thought you’d have a chance of finishing between 4th to 10th you’d possibly hang around or go, but now they might not bother going at all?

Hopefully it’ll be a bit clearer.
