Ideas for the future of Ironman

Outlaw 2013 was as hot as the surface of the sun, no cancellations there

Frankfurt now shortened to 125k bike and 21.1k run

Also need to remember volunteers out in it for hours on end, I know a lot will be local and more accustomed to it but still uncomfortable.

But equally disappointed for the athletes.

Frankfurt was the European championship race with a stacked field.

Which is a far more “normal” approach to things. Vichy 2012 was the cracking 42 degree day - the full was changed to a half.

I think Nice has a totally different set of challenges.

What’s your thoughts? Would you want to do the full or think this is best for all concerned.

Hamburg in 2019 was up to 35c at least.

It probably depends on whether this is your first full IM :man_shrugging:

Interesting as they didn’t shorten it in 2015 and it was forecast as 40+ :man_shrugging:t2:

They should’ve made it half rather than a bikers event.

Many points can be made on the first part. One of which is maybe they learnt from their mistakes, I dont think this decision was made lightly, beginning the European Championship (or is it just for AGers.)

Second part :100: agree, why not make it a half, probably so they dont have pay compensation / refund (although they probably have that covered in the T&Cs)

And agree it makes it a swimmers (assuming not wetsuite and no reduced distance for the swim) and bikers event… with half the running.

I’d want my money back tbf. Although I would accept 1/4 the swim   (but not if it was my first full)

That’s tough. But I suspect the conditions will make it feel the full distance.

It also depends on the dew point and humidity.

Austria in 2006 was hot. I was told it got up to 37°C on the run, but it wasn’t anything I hadn’t prepared for. I just got bad shoulder sunburns .

The fields tend to be bigger these days as well? Especially Nice where there was likely to be over 4000 for the 2 races?

Good point, imagine the potential increased medical needs with more entries.

I am of course conflicted.

Was I looking forward to the race? Yes.

Was I looking forward to running the marathon in this heat? Nope.

Am I disappointed I can’t see how I would have done at the full distance? Absolutely.

Can I see why they’ve shortened it given the state Europe is in right now and the recent death of a seasoned triathlete during the swim leg? Again, absolutely.

IM are between rock and a hard place. The comments on the social media posts have mostly been negative with people saying they should be able to decide, but we all know the red mist descends and people don’t think straight.

If they cancelled, then people like me are buggered and lose out.

If they run the full, then you’re gonna have A LOT of people in distress regardless of how much training they’ve done.

All I can do is adjust my race plan slightly, keep carb loading and carry on.

I was reading some of the comments on both races and they were mostly angry and negative, but I guess that’s not unexpected like you say as they’d be in race mode where you don’t always think reasonably.

Bottom line is the decision has been made, no point in frustrating yourself which just adds to stress on top of pre-race stress with added heat stress.

Best to move on and plan for what you will be doing.

I was there! It was warm on the run but didn’t feel too bad. I did go back to the chalet after and vomit and fall asleep at 6pm, so maybe there was a touch of heatstroke.

The whole reason to go to a EU Ironman is a) it’ll be hot and sunny, and b) none of the cycle hating Brit NIMBYs to tolerate. Else do the Celtman or Norseman and freeze your nips off…
