CLS effectively reaching into the back catalogue; I can remember reading old 220 articels from the 90s about those races. The names Glenn Cook, Robin Brew, Rob Barel etc.

Ironman, Private Equity & social media have ‘ruined’ the spirit of triathlon.

I’m seeing this bore ‘ironmanjayson’ on my FB feed. Anyone else? I think he finally got to limping around his second Full distance in Vitoria. Lacklustre time mind, depite all the ink & bravado. On our flight home there was a guy with an IMAZ backpack and calf tattoo.

It’s all a bit Insta now tbh.

In fact just look at Gravel to see how quickly social media ruins the spirit of things these days.

There’s a Spartan Race near us this weekend; I just look at the promo pics and think what a bunch of twits.

I suspect that’s just a handful of the ones that put themselves out there, rather than a lot who just turn up for enjoyment or fitness?

I couldn’t tell you, because I have no interest in it. But assume there are thousands of Instagrammers boring people with their epic-ness ad nauseum this time of year. Just another piece of the ‘look at me’ culture.

The Volcano tri has never gone away.

The difference is that they are adding a middle distance version.

I had assumed that it was all happening on the same day, but it looks like the sprint and oly races are in March (earlier than usual?) and the middle distance race is in the usual race slot at the end of April

I don’t follow any and usually scroll past looking for funny memes :joy:

Every running group and exercise class seems to feature the inevitable group selfie for the socials

Honestly, that’s what puts me off training with a group (and the unsociable times I have to train).

the lack of authenticity referenced above kills me (no idea who the bloke is @Jorgan referenced, but can imagine the content he spews out).

That’s why I like it here. There are some amazing athletes here, and people that have done so incredible things. But it’s understated and appreciated.

Most ‘influencers’ wouldn’t get close.

Slightly sidewards, I got an email off Ironman this morning confirming my refund for the cancelled race, looks like it is including the fees as well that I wasn’t sure about.

Still going to be 3-10 days before it appears on my CC though.

in Menorca a few weeks back, a guy in the hotel wore the same 70.3 t-shirt all week, literally every breakfast and dinner and by the pool, and had a calf tatt. Clearly he’d never done a proper ironman or he’d have worn that t-shirt all week

Didn’t see him swim once…Not surprised really.

Geneva Airport Monday morning after UTMB full of finisher gilets and people hobbling around slowly

I can speak from experience that the ones hobbling with no gilet look very sheepish after DNFing

How do you know they DNFd? Surely not everyone feels the need to wear finisher merch home? I certainly didn’t after an IM.

Same type of people who put all their post nominals in email signature blocks; maybe they should get a t-shirt.

Fair but as one who did DNF I was feeling pretty sheepish

You only get the gillet at the finish as well?
