Yeah, that swim ain’t happening ![]()
FFS!
The swim is the only part I feel relatively good about!
MAMILS rejoice!
Glad I’m not doing IM anymore; too many cancellations and course adjustments these days, for whatever reason. Imagine entering the London Marathon and them saying it’s been reduced to a Half. That’s not what people are paying & training for, so you can’t expect them to be happy.
But better than swimming in a toxic lake ![]()
It’s been pretty exceptional this year. And it nearly happened in Hamburg.
I think this is indicative of them expanding too much. These venues weren’t used in the past. Stick to the venues with years of sensible swimming locations and keep to the less is more mantra.
Unfortunately people keep entering so they aren’t going anywhere but if I went back to their races now, I’d stick to the ones with a bit of history behind them.
FWIW the swim in that lake is one of the main reasons I wouldn’t enter. The course doesn’t suit or inspire me in general.
The uptick in events after around 2010 was huge; the second half of the 2010s was when it seemed to go mainstream. Definitely past peak now.
It happened the year before we did it, then nearly to us in '19. That’s why they moved it to June?
Perhaps the Ironman calendar in Europe will need to be moved to May/Jun and Sep/Oct.
won’t get blue green algae in Wales ![]()
I think its not past peak. I did say that Tri was the new Hyrox and many are jumping into it
I’m noticing this. There’s a lot of nearly-30 year olds picking up tri. I guess that was the time I did it. It’s social, you’ve got the time to train, and if you’re in a decent job you’ve got a bit of spare cash to do it.
Yeah there’s more events, still selling out quickly, even at extortionate prices. Plenty of people at my functional fitness gym have done an Ironman.
Perhaps not in Tenby but it’s around in a number of inland lakes
I meant Tenby (and Swansea) but guess the heat has ruined most lakes. Still there are lots that are OK as they aren’t “large ponds” ![]()
At T100 London recently over the course of 2 days there were 5000 people racing so maybe the bubble hasn’t burst yet. Many were complete beginners (MTBs and shopping basket bikes in use!) and quite a few pointy end fast ones.
I’m Chief TO for an event at the end of this month with 500 sold out places and loads of people on the waiting list and asking around for places on FB groups.
When I got into tri, a lot of the newbies were either mid life crisis 30- and 40-somethings who hadn’t done much exercise for a while and suddenly wanted to get fit, or they were people like me who had a history of fitness in other sports and were looking for something different.
The under-30 AGs tended to be much sparser.
The Zoomers and young millennials all seem to be much more into health and fitness than our generation generally was at the same age, so they are probably more inclined to be looking for the next new fitness challenge.
I see a lot more young women out running and cycling than I ever did 20 years ago. It was all about gym classes back then.
If you’ve got people running and cycling then it’s not that much of a jump into triathlon.
Oh god yeah, I used to get teased endlessly when I prioritised an early night over a night out for a big bike ride or triathlon the next day. I also learnt how good an OWS was for a hangover ![]()

This generation of 25-35 year olds know nothing of the sort. Lightweights.
I wonder if they’ll see the opposite of what we’re seeing. At the moment the 50+ AG is the most competitive. They could all be washed up alcoholics by then as they get battered by sport &wellness so early in life.
It’s production of all the Instagram content alongside the training that will break them ![]()
