I’m not so sure. Remember before triathlon OCR was in vogue. Huge swathes of people doing Tough Mudders and the like.
It’s still going, but with a concentrated collection of ultra committed people. I think triathlon will be the same. The big races will be fine, the local events, not so sure….

I suspect that anyone starting out with a branded race is going to feel a bit underwhelmed if their next event is a low-key local event
Zoomers are all about travel, so a branded tri in an instagram-able location would be popular

Used to be double that though in the peak tri days! Sold out by September the previous year!

Correct - but then TFL screwed matters up by banning bikes on the DLR so it made getting to Excel much more difficult and limited parking to drive

Other way around for me. I’d been doing tri years before I’d even heard of OCR type stuff. I’ve always had the impression that Oz/NZ were a lot of years ahead though in their adoption of tri.
Probably all that swimming that’s in the blood. 
IIRC, IMNZ was the 2nd oldest IM outside of Hawaii. Canada was first I think?

They were banned last time I did it I thought, 2010 or so as I cycled to Woolwich, “walked” through foot tunnel and cycled rest of way, as the previous year took me about 3 hours to cross river!

A lake localist to me, not mentioning names Leybourne, have blue-green algae, but it’s only on the edges so don’t worry, swim a bit further in. Just don’t bring your dogs as they might get sick 
Meanwhile other, more well run, lakes close at the mere mention of anything green

I think Lakesman full was around £400 for early entries, appreciate it isn’t the destination or course that Copenhagen is but it’s a big investment these days, especially if you get a bug or injury late on.

People wouldn’t have paid that until they could flex on the socials 
No idea what Roth is now, but it was €280 for the 2008 race and IM Austria was about 100 more the following year; I remember Frankfurt being just over 500 iirc in 2015 and my last at Hamburg can’t remember @jeffb ? Everything else IM wise was in the €400-500 bracket pre 2015.

I thought Hamburg was under £500 but could be wrong and that might have been tier 1.

I remembered Roth well, I guess it was my first Full. I did other independent UK Full distance (Cots 226, Outlaw etc), but obvs cheaper than this lot.

That would make it around £500 then.
Just checked, Lakesman full next year is ~£450, half is ~£320 and both are early bird.
Makes the Cotswold races look very good value.

I think I paid €300 for IM Austria 20 years ago.
I guess inflation alone would take that to over €500 now
