IM Frankfurt 2021

Same feelings of late, should be Copenhagen in 11-12 weeks, had the email to say it’s on but non-vital trips to Denmark aren’t allowed and if it is vital there’s currently a 10 day quarantine on arrival which will kill any non-Danish entrants I’d have thought.

I know it is easy for me to say it but I would keep at it, at least until 4 weeks before. We have seen with Portugal how quick things can change. A travel industry chap was on the radio this morning saying a lot of Europe is improving fast. I know he has skin in the game but it does seem to be going the right way.

I do feel for you guys with IMs this summer though as it is the ‘maybe’ that create anxiety rather than a definite no.

Yeah, unless you love the process of Ironman training, then it’s hard!

I’m just so grateful we had no major plans or commitments last year, that rolled into this one.

Yeah, there’s a big difference between 70.3 training and full. And I’m similar to the other guys … it’s hard to motivate myself for those 6hr rides, and getting up at the crack of dawn, when there’s a high likelihood events get cancelled.

Middle distance I can race just off my usual training.

Following on from the IMUK thread.

There is a part of me now that wants this not to go ahead or not be able to travel.

I am aiming for KQ and given the fact you can’t defer this year, I’d even go as far as sacking it off this year, losing some money and entering next year.

Wait to see what Biden and BoJo have to say tonight - looks like some sort of US-UK travel corridor is imminent.
Was that your first, or second, jab you just had?
If you’re fully vaccinated, things look like they’ll be a bit easier.

Upon a bit more reflection in the shower, it just seems I’m going to have to race again in 2022 for a KQ.

If Frankfurt goes ahead and the logistics around travel aren’t restrictive, then I’ll go this year and try and have a race where nothing goes wrong.

Then enter a race for 2022.

As a teacher, getting 7-10 days off in October is a big ask at the best of times.
There’s no way if I then have to add quarantine periods on top of that.
None.

Double jab for me. I’m old remember.

I remember your “old” just not if you’d deferred Jab1 to race or train, or some other reason
:+1:t3:

Totally understand that, but there might not be any quarantine periods if the US is “green listed?”

Before making any decisions, I’d wait and see what’s announced.

You seem to be in a brilliant place, which would be a shame to let go

Yeah agree with that. You just don’t know what may happen in the future, so it’d be great to be able to put that stellar training down in a race whilst it’s still metaphorically hot.

I seem to remember you’ve had more than your share of misfortune in Ironman events?

We could have

  • Explosive diarrhea
  • Rear wheel puncture at the valve that tyre weld couldn’t fix
  • Rear wheel puncture at the valve and your spare tyre had gone bye bye about 20 miles previous
  • All your nutrition flying off down Sheephouse lane on the first decent and riding 60 miles with barely anything

Wow :scream:
That’s nearly as bad as @jaylen84 :see_no_evil:

So long as @Adam doesn’t turn up you should be able to avoid flooding of the race route.

Had the torrential rain/flooding/mudslides at Barca

I’m not going so it might be under 40 degrees. Not by much though

Haha. Thankfully I never did get a flat tyre in an Ironman. I did “upgrade” my tyres and tubes recently to Vittoria Corsa Speeds and latex. I have HED wheels. I could not get the tyres on. I will concede I’m not the best at working on bikes, but I can usually get a tyre on and off. Tolerances are much tighter now with tubeless conpatible rims. I have a friend who is a top bike mechanic and he said he lost skin off his hands getting them on. “What if I get a flat tyre,” I asked him. He said the only way they are coming off is if they are cut off. So I have wheelsthat are certainly going to be faster but that are now unrideable in training and unriskable in a big/expensive race. Maybe I’ll give them a blast in an out-and-back 10 mile TT…
Good luck in Bolton :+1:

We had tubeless-ready Edco wheels on our team bikes a few years ago and we were riding Conti GP4000s tyres with tubes.

They were a ridiculously tight fit and almost impossible for most people to get on and off. You also had to pump them up well past 100psi to get them to seat.

Thankfully, the only times I punctured out on the road I had a mechanic with me to change them.

Yeah I also remember him saying that he couldn’t get them to seat no matter what he tried. Eventually he did it. Because they are latex tubes and will go flat, I asked would they unseat when they went flat or would I need to pump them every day or two? He shrugged. Sometimes the pursuit of speed is just not convenient…!
(They haven’t unseated yet)

With the Edcos, once they’d seated it was as if you’d glued them to the rims. Even with the tube fully deflated it was a mission to separate the tyre from the rim again.

Hi All

(This isn’t my first post, I was around 1000 but needed to make a new account…)

I can’t find any mention of the new bike course in this thread. Any thoughts? I rode the new loop, and imh it’s a lot harder than it used to be.

I’ve raced there 5x now, including in 2018 and the course was already harder than previous years with 185km and about 1600m ascent - however my ride suggests the new course is well over 2000m ascent and nearer 190km. (can’t ride all of it, so it’s an estimate)

Has anyone else tested / looked?
