The way I read that map, it looks like you take a right just outside Teguise and head down the hill towards the LZ1 for an out and back before rejoining the old route to Haria and then you ride back up that hill to Teguise on the return leg. I guess that gives you back the climbing that you lose by not going to El Golfo.
The old route was a classic lap of the island. It would have made a great sportive in its own right without the inconvenience of the swim and run. When I first did it in 2008 most of the route was open to traffic in both directions. Later they closed it just in the direction we raced for most of the course. The police requirement to have the road closed in both directions was the end of the classic route. There’s just too few roads in the island to shut down the old route completely without cutting people off from the airport etc.
Yeah, interestingly the law has always been there that the road should be closed, the law isnt new, but there was a new police chief I think and he demanded the law be followed and as you say that put paid to the old route
I thought a lot of the route was fairly terrifying in 2019, having traffic on the other side of the road would have been doubly so. All races should be closed roads and fuck the consequences. Let them eat cake.
Actually even then there were parts mid island with cars crawling around me like death dealing assholes.
And Switzerland. And Bolton.
You should have been there in the days when you got buzzed by tour buses and hire cars through the Fire Mountains
remember the big orange buses choking everyone with diesel going up fire mountain on approach to camels
Mirador is the jewel in that bike course crown. Pushing up to the top with the small stone wall, looking across and down over the ocean. One of my favourite memories of bike courses
Not in the IM but on a training camp I was really enjoying that view as we cycled along, until a huge gust of wind almost blew me into the the small stone wall. New bibs needed after that
Happy with that as a bike course to be fair
That little stone wall on the way up to Del Rio was my crash mat for a low speed prat fall in 2013 - hoping not to do that again this year
@SidSnot posting some decent Lanza rides and photos on Strava this week
In Tenby and today was long run day of 3 hrs with a tough run over to colby Parkrun and run back. First Parkrun with someone famous - it was the go compare man - I do know his name but would me spell it wrong I’m sure
Also yesterday , Ryanair cancelled my flights for Tuesday from East Midlands. Luckily able to transfer onto the Monday flight which gives me more swim time, but could do without the aggravation of changing dates in the supplemental stuff
Got the race email just now with instructions about pre-race briefing and athlete check in
Will be watching this thread closely, sad I can’t be there but the next best thing will be seeing other people conquer it and enjoy it.
Anyone else noticed Sam Laidlow on the start list now? Also Lydia Dant - UK athlete who won it last year. Hoping to bump into Sam and Cam Wurf for the selfie. I see the numers are well down - last I looked less than 1200 this year - but I am still so looking forward to taking part in Lanza again. Getting that nervous anticipation feeling! Hope you are all starting the taper and its been going well.
They were promoting his entry on the IM Lanza twitter account. Will be interesting to see how him and Cam get on with the Bike (shame Sam will be ~8mins ahead). Kenneth Vandendriessche won last year with cracking bike and run, so will have to work hard to beat him assuming he is in form.
apart from Covid year its first time for a long time not been on Lanzarote for race weekend ,the numbers do seem to have levelled off at about 1100 probably about 900 finishers
It would be great to have a Sam and Cam big scrap for the win. Think Sam would have the edge and possibly even break the course record 8.30 on a good day with not much wind
It would be nice to be off the bike before they finish, maybe if i’m lucky I’ll get to see them coming the other way as I head out on my run
Yeah be a good head to head unfortunately the course has changed again this year so should be a course record be interesting to see if under 8:30,
On my 1st (and fastest) Lanza in 2008 on the old 4 lap run course, Bert Jaemmer came flying past me at the end of my 2nd lap on his way to the finish line and Bella Bayliss passed me at the end of my 3rd lap on her way to the finish line.
I think I did 10:53 that year and there was still people rolling in on the bike when I finished
that,s not hanging about sub 11 , funny that as my first lanza was my quickest and had the least wind spent the next 8 years trying to go quicker till admitted defeat last year ( or have i )
