Eh, maybe this time it’ll be OK?

I did a 3K test run last, FML it was one of the hardest runs I’ve ever done :joy:

Didn’t feel bad while I was doing it but groin\stomach was sore after, but fine this morning. So, I’m sure it wasn’t muscular? It would surely have healed by now. The ligament does sound reasonable.

Going to try an easy parkrun tomorrow and see how that goes.

Knee was a bit sore as well, ever since it clicked in the last week it has been a bit sore, I appreciate running on it probably won’t help  but I probably won’t run again until I’ve been to the physio on Thursday, it’s not actually hurting atm, but occasionally gives a sharp bite!

Was having my best week in 2 months this week (ominous foreshadowing there with the word ā€˜was’). Managed to take the exercises up a tad. Walking and moving much better. Not getting as many sharp nasty pains etc.

Even managed to get out of the car at work this week and just walk to my meeting (was still in pain for a hour or so, but I could at least walk upright).

Was a glorious day today and I didn’t want to waste it. So I pulled a few weeds out of the ground at the end of the drive. Wet ground. Easy work. Apparently not.

Just ten mins of bending over has set the whole f**king thing off again. Been in loads of pain all day. Can’t hinge at my waist at all. Sciatic nerve firing off like a right bastard.

Get the neat choice of constant dull aching pain or rapid, very nasty firing pains. Juuuust brilliant.

My fault for having positive thoughts this week, feeling like I was finally making progress. Was even planning my first run.

Absolute bastarding bastard.

Possibly for the rant thread but I tried another 5K on the dreadmill earlier, groin seems alright so far, knee is tight but not painful and I’m going back to the physio in the morning.

But the bloody hamstring is having another moan  I can’t see that it is a running related injury after just 8K so the previous thing about the nerve seems possible. Absolutely sure it is linked to a lot of sitting down in the last few days aggravating it.

But only 2 more days in the office before our break where I suspect it might actually improve!

Not an injury exactly, last night I went to bed at the usual time, I slept ok I thought, although did wake about an hour earlier than usual and couldn’t go back to sleep. When I woke I felt like I had been ill. As in recovering from flu or something. I’ve not been ill and had no symptoms, but I was tired, achey and weak. My Garmin said I had a shocking nights sleep and my stress level last night and today looks like how it does if Ive been hitting the wine hard. Not had a drink since Saturday.

Feel a bit better now, but its very odd. Guess I see what the morning brings! Will either wake up fine, or sick as a dog

Calling @apm and any calf strain experts

Rested the wretched thing for 10 days, meaning no running, not a step. Until today, when I risked a very easy jog with Junior #1 and it felt OK.

It feels mended, but recent experience tells me it’s probably not, & may be liable to do a Nagasaki if pushed too hard.

So what’s the best thing to do at this stage? More stretching and Zwifting and patience? Or am I OK to start doing some easy runs, well warmed up, no hills?

Can you do >25-30 good quality single leg calf raises?

Or 1.5X body weight for double leg seated calf raise (for at least 3 rep, ideally closer to 5)?

If not that’s a suggestion that some weakness may be contributing towards your recurrent injury.

Potentially you’ll think they’re lofty targets - I can’t do either and have never had a calf injury (although I do recurrently get shin splints and have had other lower limb running overuse injuries) - but they’re what the literature/supposed experts recommend.

PS. I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, by you trying to cling on to hoping someone will say rest/stretching is the answer

Arh Fruity ….. here we go!

Chris makes some excellent point, so definitely follow this! :backhand_index_pointing_up:

I’d suggest absolutely no running for another few weeks. Cycling is fine, as is strength work. Calf raises are great, and read up on feet placements to target different parts. Seated calf raises with a weight on your thigh is also important to target the soleus.

Also recommend deadlifts and sumo squats which bring the calf into the exercise as a stabiliser.

That aside, physio to see what’s going on in there and break down scar tissue (this hurts, a lot).

If it becomes more stubborn have a load more advice, from heel drops in trainers to insoles. The problem is you’re just not letting it recover.

Some great advice from the boys above, looking forward to watching @fruit_thief taking it on board, diligently exercising & abstaining from running hard :face_with_peeking_eye:.

I’ve mentioned before that there was a physio on the OG Tritalk that wouldn’t be happy with his patients going for a run unless they could hop 200 times on each foot.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

Tried a few of those things. 30 single leg calf raises is fine (if I’m doing it right).

loaded seated calf raises with 2 legs + 80kg (Junior FT3 sitting on my lap telling me what he wanted for Christmas) felt ok too.

Hopping … wow, who knew how hard that is … can do it 200 times on the uninjured left leg, calf muscle crying out towards the end mind. On the right leg, I was uneasy after about 80 of them so stopped.

Feels like something to work with, thanks :+1:t2:

I had a similar bad calf this time last year, took a good few weeks off but flared up again and back to square one. Took about 3 months before I could get back to some decent running.

Cycling and gym work was fine as the others said.

Definitely try to find other stuff to do, otherwise it’ll just keep recurring and annoy you even more

Ooops. Just read an article from the @fruit_thief book of injury rehab.

Probs not the best idea so soon!

OK, bit of a weird one. I have my MRI on Jan 18th, then my stomach investigation on Jan 20th.

Yesterday I had a txt from NHS saying log in for an update on a referral. Did that and I’m on the waiting list for Maxillo Facial Surgery at Royal Hampshire hospital, which is news to me!

I’m assuming a mistake. I’ve got enough going on. :man_facepalming:t2:

Had my MRI ay Lymington yesterday, very nice location for a hospital. 40 mins of whirr whirr BANG BANG BANG. They gave me some headphones but were playing Heart FM :man_facepalming:t2: Results in Feb I think.

Tomorrow, I’m off to Swindon for the stomach specialists. Thursday, I have a call with my GP to do the annual ā€˜do you still need your expensive migraine medication?’ dance.

uggh
