Chronic calf problems, partly caused by poor flute activation and strength.
I’ve been working on it over the last year, c. 2 times a week. Plenty of donkey kicks, clams and bridges. I look like I’m out of a 90’s aerobics video.
Had a session with the physio tonight. We talked about what I thought was my achilles problem but he said it’s not that and my achilles are fine.
The issue is with my left soleus (sp) muscle and he could tell how tender it was when I was on the table and he said that if it was kicking off by what he was doing, running was obviously going to make it many times worse.
So, in addition to what I’m doing, I have to do straight knee and bent knee calf raises, ultimately getting to do them on one leg for 30 reps with no shaking.
Seeing him in 4 wks, no running until then but can spin if I want. I think I’m going to need to revisit next year’s grand plan.
Sounds some sensible advice. I’ve been trying to get better at hamstring/Calf strength the last 12 months, came across this a while back but not sure how agreed the targets are, I’ve been wanting to ask some advice here on TT for a long time about ‘expected’ strength values, or balance quads vs hamstrings etc.
I’m doing 1 x 25 of those, both legs, 10% body weight in rucksack for my tendonitus.
Long term aim for 3 x 25 each leg, but I have to watch the sole of my foot and in particular my ancient sessamoiditus. Seems to be helping and strengthening.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a set of fomulae for generic triahtletes, strength of various muscles in relation to others. I’m sure that someone will know of some research.
Keeping it steady, building up so slow. Seemed to be progress every run.
Last time out felt tight after, walking felt more restricted, pre run stretch was uncomfortable.
Has anyone else had an MRI? They gave me the option of headphones but I declined and wanted to hear the machine in full effect. I really liked the sound of it, similar to the sort of music that I make! I was so tired that I fell asleep in it haha! Luckily I didn’t have to go all the way inside, my mate said he freaked out when he had to do that.
Initial analysis of the MRI was that it was a growth from nerve sheath but they couldn’t say exactly what. I was fast tracked to the multi-displincernery team as a small chance of something sinister. Had a few chats with my dad - he had a growth on his spinal cord that he had to have removed. They thought it was neurofibromatosis but after some further analysis it was identified as a schwannoma.
I’ve just had a letter back and they are saying it’s just a neuroma and no further action required. I might get it checked in more detail to see if it is actually a schwannoma. All good though, I’m glad I don’t need a biopsy! I celebrated with a run up on the hills!
Yes, a few. Hearing the machine is oddly satisfying the first time or for a shorter scan. I did a couple that I think might have been at least an hour for a research study that involved scanning my liver and legs and I’m fairly sure I had music on during them.
I think I’ve been fully in on most occasions but don’t get particularly claustrophobic but could see why some people do. I close my eyes and try not to fall asleep. It helps being a good daydreamer!
Injury is a total pain in the arse. I’ve never had an injury until 2020 - tore hamstring. And now - Last month was bounding along 11 mile runs one week feeling invincible, the next my heels seized up
Right heel first. That settled down, then left one went funny. That didn’t. physio appointment was another fortnight so fitness draining away.
Analysis - Seemed to have lost loads of flexibility and strength in tendon area. says it’s caused by inner calves pulling on them… from just doing too much at my age. How effin’ depressing. Says though with the exercises to build up strength again and occasional running to set parameters during this should be ok but 20 min jog last night was depressing.
Yeah I had one over a decade ago. Had a big unicameral bone cyst at the top of my femur - just below the ball of the joint in my hip. Almost snapped. So had to have a full body scan to check nothing else anywhere. I think I quite enjoyed it… Parents were really freaking out though. Nothing else thankfully just a freakish growth. Was on crutches for 3 months post op.
off to see an orthopaedic surgeon this afternoon to get a diagnosis on my knee injruy - torn cartilage or something else. outcome might decide whether I get to ski at the end of January - travel restrictions allowing of course.
Just wanted to say thanks for the discussion a little up thread on strengthening the soleus. I’ve been having problems with soreness in my left leg but struggling to pin point what the issue is as it was, to me anyway, coming from a weird place down the inside of my shin. I’d never heard of that muscle before but after a bit of reading I think it’s pretty likely. I have problems with my knees anyway due to pretty splayed duck feet and general leg muscle tightness (utter lack of flexibility seems to run in the family!), so it all fits.
Going to rest up until after Boxing Day and then start trying some of these bent knee exercises to try and strengthen up a bit, alongside the other stuff I do to try and strengthen/loosen up my hip flexors and hamstrings a bit.
Maybe I should add touching my toes to the 2022 Goals thread.
