Injury List- do any parts of you still work?

Apologies but that really made me laugh.

Mrs W has been suffering with that cold/flu bug that’s been going around for the last 5 weeks. She’s got a terrible cough that’s been badly affecting her sleep. She finally got the doctor to give her antibiotics for it a week ago but the cough still hasn’t gone.

I started getting mild cold symptoms a couple of weeks ago. I carried on training through, but they’ve developed into a chesty cough over the last few days.

The weather here looks glorious for cycling today, but I’m forcing myself to be sensible and maybe do a light spin on the turbo at most. Anything harder makes me cough during and after the session. I’m supposed to be doing the Hell of the Ashdown sportive next week, so hopefully it’s eased by then.

It’s all a bit frustrating given the amount of training that I lost last year with my shoulder. I was just starting to get back to where I was before the accident. The bone is healed now, but I need to book a 2nd op to take the metal out. That’ll be another couple of weeks off

I’m now watching youtube videos of people…errmm… ‘testing’ MRI machines with metal objects :grimacing: A much better route for compliance than a simple sign I’d say!

Ugh. I’m obviously not built for lots of running. Heading to physio on Monday after feeling my knee go early-ish into my long run this morning (which I stopped straight away). Pretty certain it’s some form of patellar tendonitis as it’s at the front of the knee just below the kneecap.

6 weeks until London Marathon. I’ve got an 18 mile and two 16 mile runs in my legs. Will listen to the physio obviously but wondering if I just kill any and all thoughts of further running training now and turn up undercooked, remove any time goals and just try and enjoy the experience of the race?

Frustrating as I’ve been really militant in doing all my exercises, stretches, and injury prevention work. But I guess still lacking strength there.

Does anyone have any views on the relative merits of patellar tendon knee straps and/vs knee braces? And which one to give a go if they do help?

Really frustrating, hopefully the physio can give some guidance. If it doesn’t aggravate it I’d try and do bike sessions or the treadmill.

Hopefully you’ll be alright to do the race and take some pressure off to enjoy it.

Thanks Jeff. Paying the price for being so damn lazy in my youth and not building up a good base for picking this stuff up as I screech towards 40

I dont know about running but Ive had an on and off knee issue for a while when doing squats. I bought some neoprene knee braces and they make a massive difference.

Im sure its worth trying some and maybe ask the physio what they recommend

He says it’s bursitis. So a little relieved, and should be able to manage it. Apparently it’s one of those things where the pain is worse than the damage due to the nerve endings or something. Most likely caused by weakness in my hips and poor form (my right knee is bad for cutting across inwards when I run, that valgus thing).

On we go…

Dont know what Ive done*, but my lower back and hips front and back are really tight and painful.

  • I suspect its actually lack of doing anything for a couple of weeks. Always seem to sieze up when Im being lazy.

I tried some Yoga in the week with Adreine but her voice and all the namaste and hands together crap immediately annoyed the hell out of me.

Probably our usual problems of trying to go from static to moving without giving our bodies a chance.

I really rate Apple fitness+ if you have apple products. You can normally get about a months free subscription to try it but it’s also a rolling monthly subscription which you can cancel anytime. They have a huge range of all workouts from 5 mins to 45 mins

Thanks. I am vehemently anti Apple

My wife is a member of a gym and they have an app with virtual workouts including some yoga.

Probably just your age

You’ve turned 40, right?

Sadly I think that is the case. I will be 43 this year, since turning 40 its like a switch has been flipped and everything hurts.

Never had a single injury before

Cortisone injection on my iliopsoas tendon is booked in for mid April but that seems to be mostly dying down now and I barely get any much pain from it now. My foot on the other hand… I’ve done something to the 4th metatarsal, physio reckons it isn’t stress fractured. But I’m not so sure. So once again I’m off running until that sorts itself out. sigh. I think it was when I moved my cleats right far back and then did 3.5 hours on the turbo 2 weeks agao and possibly strained something under my foot otherwise I can’t think whats caused it. Not that I really need to be doing much run training at the moment but its my de stress time, very annoying.

I think I’ve been a bit run down all day but just having an omelette for dinner, nothing unusual there. Got half way through it and felt decidedly sick and still do.

I’m not sure if the weekend race has really taken its toll but it was only 38km! Something isn’t right though

My good man, that’s a long way!

And by no means a normal 38km either!

I know but I shouldn’t be feeling it still should I? I may have gone to the well a bit deep!
I’m trying to think too hard as I have another race on April 1st, so technically, I’m in taper mode anyway.

rolled my left ankle running this morning, twice :face_with_head_bandage:

first time I was daydreaming and didn’t spot the pavement ending and landed awkwardly on the curb. That was about 2km in. It hurt quite a lot, thought it might be the sort of tweak that could be run off, so carried on, but by 5km it was still a bit sore so I turned around rather then completing the slightly longer loop I had in mind.

That should have been the end of it, but what a numpty: at almost exactly the same spot on the way home I ran over a loose stone and rolled it again :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth: . This one really hurt and I felt something go pop. I could not run on at all. Limped home and am now soaking it.

This was in hoka carbon x shoes, not normally prone to ankle sprains but find them quite rolly for some reason.

guess it’s pool only for a few days

If it makes you feel any better, I fell over twice at Endure 24. Once on lap 5 where I was just running along on a flat section and just tripped on a stone or something and went down pretty hard, loads of people helped me up.

Then on lap 6, I was running with a guy and showed him where I fell on the previous loop and about 30 mtrs later, did the same again! :man_facepalming:
