Injury List- do any parts of you still work?

I don’t think I could do that when I’m not injured

It makes you grimace, that’s for sure :joy:  :joy:

Suspected 4th metatarsal stress fracture confirmed last night. Orthopaedic foot specialist sent me for an xray within 3 mins of talking to him. Its 4 weeks since it happened so could easily see the fuzzy new bone growth. Quite how it happened I don’t know. Running volume hadn’t changed at all. Probably another 2-4 weeks off running. He said just be guided by the symptoms. Maybe I’ll get some injury luck eventually!

Tennis elbow?

I’d be feeling thankful for not suggesting she attack them in the groin area :grimacing:

It could be yeah. When I saw the consultant about my shoulder I had done a trial swim and I said the shoulder was ok but I had pain hear, and he said oh a bit of tennis elbow.

Probably need to go and see a physio but PMI is changing providers at the end of the month so guess I will need to wait

Some isometric wrist extensions not a bad place to start while you’re waiting for someone to diagnose ± guide you further.
Could just use the other hand (oo-er) or any solid object as resistance to push against if don’t have 1-2kg weights.

Prescription would be a bit of a guess (@pacha or others might have more concrete numbers) but I’d probably start somewhere around 10x10s daily, but looking to increase that duration quite quickly towards say 30s holds, rather than increasing the weight.
Can move on to going through grip strength, range of motion of extension, maybe up to twisting activities like wringing out a towel after that.

Super thanks will give that a go.

Intensity shouldn’t be hard. Eg if doing a 30s hold should be feeling something, but also know you could do 45s. Shouldn’t be feeling like you could do 90s though.

Any change of shoes?
There’s some anecdotal ideas floating round that we’re seeing more atypical foot stress fractures with people wearing carbon plated shoes. BJSM ran a piece on it couple weeks ago

No change of shoes. I’ve been in Next% Tempos for quite a while now and the current pair have ~500km on them. Like wise the cycling shoes (XC MTB style) are the same ones I’ve used for quite a few years now. My initial thought was changing cleat position (taking them far back) was the cause but even the bike fitter said that direction is usually the safest and shouldn’t bring an injury on.

They do have a carbon plate though
Think the speculation was that the foot will bend differently with the stiff plate and lead to slow accumulation of increased stress.
The case series was written regarding navicular fractures (one of the bones before the metatarsals nearer the ankle), but authors said they reckon they’re seeing more of all foot bones, or off less loading etc

*Composite plate. Interesting. Do you have link to the article? I have been running solely in them for probably the last 2 years. I’m on my 3rd pair. And the last year my running hasn’t been as consistent as I’d have liked due to various injuries.

Mine was definitely the metatarsal. I was looking over the x-ray with the consultant.

I also read about more/different ankle injuries too.

Fair enough, unlikely related for you then!

day 17 since anklemageddon. Going to risk a 6km jog :crossed_fingers:

edit: still not brilliant. Slow jog OK but not ready for anything more yet

edit: day 19, progress, steady easy run this morning & felt more stable. Still some twinges if any twisting movement on footstrike. Taking the opportunity to work on run form, and to be hypervigilant for stray stones that might roll it again.

hopefully final edit, day 20. much better again overnight. Ran 6km and almost forgot about it, just some twinges on uneven ground. Really thankful to be pretty much mended & will try to remember not to take it for granted

I narrowly avoid a likely serious injury earlier.

Walking the dog and it started raining so cut across the doctors surgey car park, about to step up the curb and notice the drain right next to where I am stepping has no grate.

Probably would have been broken leg territory, small child could fall down it.

Reported it on the council website.

Is it a job creation scheme for the doctors?

Could be. The bupa clinic also shares that car park so maybe their physios need some work
