Dodgy knee was feeling good so I tested it out with a run yesterday morning.
Fine for first 4-5km. But started hurting in Km5 . I only ran 6km.
Still hurts a bit now. Ever so mildly, I mean I could easily go out and run 6km again right now, and actually would really like to. But am not going to as donāt want to mess it up. Pool and gym it is still
Interestingly it has been absolutely fine after running 3km easy with Mrs, and also after 3 x 1.7km quite hard in aquathlon last Friday. It always seems to be at about the 5km mark it comes on! Maybe body is trying to tell me sprints only from now onā¦
Knee related, regarding my Meniscus tear and what I am going to do about it (I could run up to 6 miles at marathon pace but after that my knee would be bad and it would also be bad at any point, not necessarily running, if I twisted it), I am waiting on a date for keyhole surgery but very likely to sack it off when I get it. I saw a good sports physio who after manipulating my leg/knee felt that the pain was not related to my Meniscus but Patellofemoral due to my arches being fairly flat and my knee out of alignment. I now have ācustomā insoles which were quite uncomfortable at the start but Iām finding them ok after a couple of weeks. Iām also concentrating a lot to keep my leg in good form and have a series of strengthening (gym leg machines) plus stretches and foam rolling (my IT band was also very tight). Really hoping this is going to work which is going to take a while so happy to give it several months because it was sounding like keyhole surgery wasnāt going to be the magic bullet I was hoping for. I havenāt run for a couple of weeks but will have a go later, nothing reckless though.
have you had a MRI on the knee?? that would define whether you have a meniscal tear or not. If it is a tear then compensation of style will only help overcome the pain but never remove the fact itās torn which at some point in the future will come back at you.
Yes I have had an MRI and the consultant showed me the tear (a white line across the black triangle area at the side of my knee). He offered an injection (I assume steroid, although the physio subsequently said a steroid injection wasnāt good for cartiledge) or keyhole which I said yes to so am on the waitng list 33-6 months (a private hospital I was referred to by my local NHS hospital). Iām sure he said this was to have a look around and do what he could (Iām not sure this would repair the cartiledge) ? Thereās so much conflicting information on the subject itās a nightmare to know whatās for the best.
I think this has been discussed before. Iāve had 2 meniscectomies which have been succesful; Mrs FB has had 3. All times it cured any pain issues and allowed us to get back to routine exercise relatively quickly.
Surgeons will usually say they will have a lookaround but do the meniscectomy while theyāre in there - only takes about 20 mins.
I have trawled through here and I think you were the only person with a positive outcome with others neutral or negative. I know someone who had it done and she said if she had the choice again wouldnāt have done it and also what Iāve been told by the physio. For now Iāll carry on with this physio solution as I will still have a few months until surgery and see how I get on. I can manage the day to day pain, going up and down the stairs etc which isnāt that bad, what was worse was when my knee just sort of gave way usually after some sort of random twisting action i.e. running around an obstacle, rolling my ankle running, stepping into the porch with a bit of a twist to get my key in the lock, twisting at the top of the stairs carrying something heavy. All sorts of things I have always done which I struggle to stop myself doing. Iāll give an update in a couple of months. Thanks
For me, thereās enough reasons there to have the surgery - itās impacting on your normal life and I think even with physio it wonāt remove some of those issues especially the twisting ones.
She didnāt get any improvement so felt she went through the process for no benefit. I appreciate everyone is different.
The surgeon does sound like he knows what he is doing (which is obviously a good thing) :-
āHe has a special interest in advanced surgical techniques for the management of knee arthritis in young patients which includes cartilage surgery, osteotomies/re-alignment procedures and different partial knee replacements.ā He did also say there was some sign of arthritis there.
I can live with going through the recovery period so if at worst it will be for nothing i.e. surgery wonāt make it worse then perhaps I shouldnāt rule it out yet.
I had read (and the physio repeated it) that 20% of people under 50 have a Meniscus tear whihc doesnāt trouble them and 40% over 50 do, which is why I was more inclined to go the physio route as just because I have a tear doesnāt mean it is a problem.
I will still carry on with the rehab/strengthening work for now which canāt be a bad thing anyway and see how I get on.
Not too bad re the Covid after effects thanks mate can still feel it in my throat a bit. I ran on Tues and breathing is definitely a bit laboured but I will take it easy on the weekend. The toughest day is Sunday.
Had quite an uncomfortable night last night though. I have this kind of āacheā in my legs, particularly in my left. I donāt think itās muscuallar itās that kind of āache in the bonesā you get when you arenāt well. Almost like a bit of sciatica. Hard to describe.
Iām leaving for Cornwall in a couple of hours, so Iām sure 6hrs in the car will do it the world of good!
Well, I think I might have made a right call for once on bailing of Sat and Sun. I feel very flat today and little energy.
I was going to work but I have the day booked off, so some good eating a maybe a light ride on the moto.
Bah humbug
My wife and I have been ill on and off for two weeks now. Started as stomach illness with headache, now progressing into a cough and headache and sore throat. Youngest daughter has been off school, we sent her back today but not sure that was the right choice.
I thought I was feeling better but this morning I wake up and my stomach is doing somersaults.
Wow. Iāve got the same. Stomach settled down, sore throat came, went, returned, now itās gone again, but still have the banging headaches. Hope you feel better soon.
Started to feel a sore throat friday then dog rough yesturday & today, nose is running like a dripping tap, headache, puffed eyes & a biy achey. Fly to Jamacia on holiday Wednesday, best be over this shit .
Decided to try and do a bit more cardio as only really been doing weights since I joined the gym at Easter.
Did 15mins on the punchball but it swung back and hit me right on the end of my thumb (bad technique I know)
Anyway, punchball wins by TKO
Things not great for me in the last 18hrs or so. That rib pain I had a few weeks ago came back with a vengeance yesterday, except itās on the r/h side this time.
I had to be helped out of the car yesterday afternoon and spent the rest of the day in bed, trying to find a position that didnāt hurt. Sleeping has been very problematic.
Itās like the worst stitch youāve ever had. No rattling feeling when I breathe and the Dr checked me for pneumonia last time, which was all clear.
I canāt raise my right arm very high and definitely canāt take a full breath. Once past the ādanger zoneā moving about is ok but itās a really narrow band of being able to not feel anything.
I canāt imagine what has brought it on. (or even what it is). I was doing about 30 mins of scrubbing on Saturday, where I was cleaning the path for Mum. I also had a manual pressure pump spray which was being pumped loads to spray Wet and Forget down.
Hard to imagine that would cause this?
Another blow for Arc prep. Every day counts right now.
