Re: orthotics. I’ve had knee pain since London marathon last year and a few months ago managed to get to the front of the waiting list for an NHS podiatry appointment. My calves were incredibly tight so he told me to get a calf stretch board and use that for a few months and then come back.
I came back, he was pleased with progress and then suggested orthotics - but only for day to day use and not really running (to be fair, one parkrun a week isn’t much).
I’ve just had them fitted (all of 30 seconds) today and I’ll see how I get on. As I’m at home nearly all day every day then I might need to stick them in a pair of shoes to wear around the house - he said don’t put them in slippers as the shoe isn’t firm enough (or indeed at all).
Things aren’t good at all lately with my back. This is the longest problem stint since all the surgery. It’s not been right since Arc, maybe all the throwing up wrecked something?
I’ve been trying to push through but starting to have to admit that it’s affecting things quite badly.
I hope I haven’t pushed my luck too far🤷🏻♂️
Went out to friends yesterday early evening for a couple of cans of fossies then came home to get my (pub) bike as I was going to a talk down our (local) sailing club and a couple more drinks. I was running behind on time so set off in a bit of a rush. Whilst pedalling got a glove out of my pocket. Next thing I know I’m in a heap on the road (quiet road with no traffic or lights). FFS.
Wrists hurting and right let must have taken a knock on the handlebar in the fall.
Picked myself up, turned around and walked the 30 seconds home. Came indoors, ate half of MrsF’s meal for one dinner and stayed in the rest of the evening.
I think I must have sprained my left wrist or something as I can move it but it’s painful (not like broken bone painful). Right wrist pretty much ok and leg aches but I can walk ok. FFS.
Got some garden jobs to do in the next few days so hopefully I’ll be a lot better by mid week.
There’s probably little to check that would reveal an outcome I’m not aware of TBH. it’s been operated on 6 times, mostly by private surgeons when I had insurance.
My GP is so overweight that she wouldn’t know what an athlete would require. The only reason I stay with her is because I’m paranoid about my migraine script getting canned.
I’m getting very tired of lurching from one biomechanical crisis to another though.
A higher focus on the post op S&C regime I’ve had as rehab will help with mobility. I know I can strengthen it but it the question is whether i just dig another hole by going long again
Hmm, that sounds like a good way to get a scaphoid fracture. Hope it’s not though. They tend to be painful when you press in the groove formed by the 2 tendons that stand out at the base of the back of the thumb, where it meets the wrist, if you do a hitch -hike thumb sign ??
Thankfully that’s ok there - I’ve had a scaphoid fracture many years ago (and have broken my wrist once or twice before!) and as I’m left handed that seems to be the hand I naturally reach out with if I ever fall over. The wrist just seems stiff at the moment.
Cheers mate. Bit of a worry because I’m experiencing a bit of that ‘spasm’ feeling which I haven’t really had since the surgeries. It always aches but I’ve not had that ‘locked up/electric shock’ feeling for a few years now.
I have no idea what has kicked this off. I need to be patient for sure
Are you getting that spasm/lock going from sitting to standing? If so, you have my sympathy it’s awful because you know it’s unavoidable. At the risk of teaching my Granny to suck eggs I’ve found that using a Pilates exercise ball instead of a chair helpful.
I used to get it like that and particularly getting in and out of bed ( I slept on the floor mostly and slithered to the bathroom, I wish I was joking!)
This time it just seems at random angles and not really repeating obviously in any one kind of movement. It’s very frustrating and really hard to concentrate on anything
FFS another cold. After a few weeks of solid exercise, nothing epic I have a another flipping cold. The last one was straight on to my chest, where I didn’t feel especially unwell but coughing for best part of 3 weeks. This one is just in sinuses for now.
Unfortunately things are not great for me still. I attempted a wal yesterday and only got about 300 mtrs before turning around. It was just too awkward.
I’m working a bit, lying down a bit. Totally fed up
So… nine days on and there’s a bit that’s really tender (not quite in that location though). Went to the local minor injuries unit and queued up for the 9am opening. I was out of there about 11:15am after triage, doctor, x-rays and doctor follow-up. I had some x-rays to look at the scaphoid but they couldn’t see anything definitive - apparently they can take time to show - so I’m being referred to the fracture clinic for 7-10 days time and we’ll go from there. They’ve given me a splint to wear in the meantime.
I’m quite happy with this as I’ll not be able to knock my wrist accidentally as much as I have done over the past week - even when trying to be careful!
'kin Whooping Cough! Was vaccinated against it, but the vaccine has 85% efficacy so some vaccinated people are getting sick anyway. Sore throat and increasingly disgusting cough, went to the doc after 2.5 weeks and got a week of antibiotics. They’ve eased the symptoms somewhat but I still have coughing fits every hour even at night, and I have to sleep sitting-up. If I sleep laying down I wake up choking on phlegm.
Cardio exercise is slow dog walks for a while. It’s known as the 100-day cough so probably no training for me this spring. Not really interested in socialising either - I’m not infectious any more, but I am disgusting.
If you get a cough which keeps getting worse go to the docs after two weeks. If it is Whooping Cough you won’t get any antibiotics after three weeks.
