Personally I think most of the animosity is because of the ludicrous positions of the pro crowd. Not the man himself. If people didn’t keep posting how outrageous the criticism of him is, mostly strawmen arguments themselves, the rational people wouldn’t get pissed off and post about what an asshole he is.
But you know what it’s like over there - you are either with us or you are against us. They don’t know what a reasoned discussion is.
When i did my indoor pressing instrument distance record, i had protracted discussions with them that led to Guinness taking the record off their books
One of the best on-line comments I got was from some chap in the US saying it undermined his 16 hour achievement…
In 2011 I did genuinely run 4/ 5 marathons a week. I was just enjoying the novelty of getting loaded the night before and then running 25 miles at 6am and going this is mental! I ran a couple of ultras ( one a 30 miler the day after a 25 mile run, and i fuckin’ won it ) - I never made a huge deal of it. This sort of mad behaviour carried on all summer. I carried on running sick distances until end of 2012. Then I got fed up. Wish I’d raced more now. Guess we all have our reasons. I mean I went and drew a caravan park for 3 years for ffs. I’m not in stuff for the glory lol
The body is amazingly resilient when it needs to be. I bet as it was low intensity then the miles added up the body adapted. If he was throwing some fast stuff in unprepared , it may have been a different outcome.
I think the problem I have with the guy is that he hasn’t done what he set out to do.
So I watched the 50 IM in 50 days in 50 states and I was initially engrossed and was really routing for him. I thought that it was a brilliant challenge. Anyway if my recollection is correct at one point there was an issue where he couldn’t run and resorted to an indoor trainer. This for me is the start of the problem.
So if I was in that situation I would say that the attempt was over and I would have to return another day and have another go. But no he carries on and again if I recall correctly there were other points at which the rules were bent to allow him to carry on.
So now no one else can have a go at this 50 50 50 challenge because he has ‘done it’ but the point is he hasn’t
I applaud the effort, how much he has pushed himself and how probably he has inspired others. I don’t mind that he is building his business. Just don’t say you have achieved something when you haven’t
Yes always steady running. Just got very metronomic. It was partly because I had signed up for an ultra so that was looming. I was staying at my mum and dads so I ate very well.
I had recently run my first sub 3, not a massive field but came 8th so that got me psyched. I had done days of doubling up prior and my long runs had just got longer. It was very gradual. When I began I would leave drinks in hedges, take gels etc but later I wouldn’t need so much. Always took a gel and enough money for a taxi, or water from a village shop just in case though. The 30 mile race was insane though. Again not a big field. But it was perfect prep for a 40 mile race a month or so later.
Tbh, I can’t see past his narcissism. He makes everything about him, including the lives of his friends and family. What he’s doing is secondary to that, good or bad.
I was sort of similar - a bit later. I discovered running aged 14/15 and really got into athletics over summer of ‘92. Shaved half a minute off my 1500m over that summer through sessions with local athletics club. They were really hard sessions - tues and Thursdays. Some of the guys were talented so I was really pushed. one guy ran for England I think, the other at 15 was regularly running 1:59s in the 800m. Went back to school a different athlete and smashed the cross country that season.
But 16/17 started running regular 10 milers and summer ‘94 ran a 10 mile every other day. Entered the Grantham canal ultra run that summer even though I was too young legally. Ran to my mates house that summer every weekend with him on a bike carrying some water. 18 milers. Back then I didn’t know I had to eat during my runs so I would always conk out about 18 miles in. Needless to say I got to the 26.2 mile distance at the Grantham race having not touched any food and I had to bail. Ambulance back to the showers lol. I was really disappointed but my dad said I should be proud. Never knew what my time was. I was off way too quick though. Young and a bit foolish!
*** Grantham was a 33 miler. Nottingham city FC carpark along canal to Grantham town centre. It was defunct but may have been resurrected ***
I was never the fastest - county level did ok. Second in county champs that autumn but never ran in inter counties race. School wouldn’t let me take time off lol. Fun times. Always enjoyed the x country back then. There was a good core bunch of us. Mate still in touch with - we cycled through Spain after our first year at college. Did the Alps few years after ( horrendous! I was pretty unfit ) he can still blast along. Yeah I loved the buzz for sure from those old ten mile runs. Got me away from everyone too. Carried a Walkman in one hand too : pearl jam etc on the headphones… headmaster gave me a balling out one morning after assembly cos he nearly ran me over
I definitely wasn’t a good fit for that school lol
He’s pretty ripped - Americans - all the insta videos - they’re all shirtless running along some flawless tarmac in Utah talking about their soul. They should try that through Glasgow lol
All I can think of is if @Toyota_Crown had the time/money to do this he’d be fine for 100 iron distances, but I don’t know he has quite the same instagram look about him though
