Alster is 21 degrees today; fair bit of rain forecast week after next.
Isn’t it the ITU in about a week as well?
Jeff
I made a pact with myself that if I qualified for Nice, I would do the Etap du Tour a week before Hamburg… so looks like I am climbing mountains for my taper. Plan is to keep HR nice and low and enjoy the day out
Is it taper time yet, my legs are hanging on!
Jeff
Taper? I have 2 events to do before Hamburg
Fortnight to go Jeff
National 100M TT next weekend for me, had my eye on another the weekend after but haven’t entered yet.
Yes, 2 weeks
Long run this week might be a split 10k/18k or something to hopefully reduce risk.
What’s the water temp today
I’m going to try out the new Roka in the next week or so.
Jeff
24.1 today Jeff, but that’s at the zenith of this current heatwave. Coming couple of weeks looking way cooler plus rain:
I would take next weekends forecast over today every time.
Not sure about that, I’d be putting my coat on for the bike
Jeff
Anything above 15 is comfortable for me on the bike in a trisuit. Actually the 113 was more like 9-10 degrees first thing, and I just added toe covers. Hands did get a tad chilly though.
Water is 22.1 today @jeffb
Long-range forecast is making a non-wetsuit swim look unlikely with all the rain. That would have been a chance for me to grab a few more minutes on some of you before the bike
The swim is just damage limitation for me ATM, I’m going to try the new Roka hopefully this week and see if it comes with a hidden outboard engine!
Failing that, I’m praying for a duathlon, although my dodgy knee might even but the dampers on that. Physio tomorrow night and need to consider whether I just avoid much running between now and then.
Jeff
There is a post on the FB page for ironman Hamburg mentioning algae returning…in German but translate does a reasonable job of making it comprehensible. Not official just a local by the sound of it.
Guess the rain/lower temps would help/hinder depending on your perspective
Hmm, I think I’m all for the IM Cork approach, 112M TT and a marathon
Jeff
Why would you enter a Triathlon hoping for a Duathlon?
Have you heard of Powerman?!
Here’s a bike course video in German. Filmed a month ago. Any questions on what’s said let me know. At the start the RD basically says no alternative swim location due to logistics (Hamburg us surrounded by water!). He says last year was the first time in 15 years there’s been an issue. And yet again this year…
Oh, any Duathlon would start with a ‘short run’.
Only joking about the duathlon, although I understood the reasons I was a bit disappointed the swim was shortened at IM Lou in October, even though it was mostly downstream anyway (see US downstream triathlon swim thread
) so I don’t really class it as proper IM, despite the fact the weather made the bike carnage.
I’ll have a look at the bike course video in a bit.
They did find algae in Derwent but it went before the Lakesman so fingers crossed, otherwise my last IM will still be Barcelona in 2016!
Jeff
Water down to 20.6 this afternoon, with an air temperature of 15.8 at 4pm local
die algae!
You want the Chlorophyll Blaualgen under 75.0 pg/l (bathing prohibited) looks like it’s currently at 33.3 pg/l. It’s difficult to tell exactly which measurement of what chemical, as there are several very similar componds they measure. A straightforward blue algae (blaualgen) measurement of 15.0 pg/l is supposed to trigger a warning system, whatever that entails.
The problem with the Innenalster is that it’s a small body of water, so I presume it’s harder for the algae to disperse there - and we swim right through that bottleneck under the bridge where they measure it. I think surely they can ‘comb’ the lake there, as it’s a small area…
Next year the event is 21 June…I wonder why.
