Ironman UK 2021

I would imagine more DNS than ‘normal’ for a high attrition race.

Given Frankfurt '15 was in ‘normal times’ the DNS/F rate was about 34% iirc!

I just counted 155 DNF men and 1 DSQ from the results pdf and 30 DNF women.

Well done to Rosie Walsh by the way for winning F18-24 by being the only competitor :+1:

Okay so I have 1129 ag men starting, 155 DNF or 13.7%
30 DNF from 139 ag women starting, 20.5%

Overall 1268 age group starters 185 DNF or 14.5%

Shoot me if the maths is wrong obvs.

I tracked 5 IMJUK posters and only 1 finished.

Just goes to show IMJUK posters are more likely to DNF - everyone abandon that group!

IMJ’ers didn’t finish?

Wow!

Perhaps they need more loving encouragement and gentle support, and less pressure to train really hard next time.

that seems low, seeing as 2019 was 17.1% !

Previous Bolton years have all been less than 10%.

So an improvement on 2019!

I bet they’ll blame Ironman and launch a class action lawsuit for return of their entry fees……

Okay…funny you should say that…

…as I was waiting for my bike at 1730, with my tail between my legs, there were MANY parents of athletes there, foaming at the mouth, demanding to speak to “someone” about the “dangerous” course

Personal responsibility here, folks.

Yeah, well I wouldn’t rely on my number I was really just wondering if it was as high as it seemed through the tracker and either way it doesn’t look above average.

Of course, more than 1 in 10 not finishing a race is actually really high it’s just we’re attuned to stupid races!

The field was decimated, I believe would be the appropriate turn of phrase…

Now I would give you 100 likes if I could.

explained by 2019 being epically hard compared to this year which obviously had to be made easier

Has anyone compared 2019 tough 3 lap bike actual climbing figure, with this years 2-lap (which seemed just as tough to me!)

I can live with “just as tough” and as you did both who better to give a comparison (and 2019 didn’t have the rain, thankfully)

nice one Sid. Expected nowt less after your super human performance at Blenheim Weekend Warrior last yr.
Bad luck and good luck with your puncture(s).
You say you didn’t walk a step of the run like that’s a good thing? Fair play and brave, but personally I’d defo reckon if you’d powerwalked e.g. just the main bit of the Park climb (and ate/faffed, whilst doing so if required) you’d have banked more recovery and overall run the remainder of the lap faster, and overall faster full stop with less general fade.
A Run (power)Walk strategy is so effective for 99% of us mortals it’s practically cheating  , and is my No.1 IM Top Tip

OK I was ar$ed to look up my previous bike split stravas:
2019 was 8904 ft, and
2021 showing as 8281 ft - so not that much innit basically. Spesh as wet this yr.

Wasn’t a boast, just how I anted to tackle it, plus the kids were shouting and yelling at me on the hill, so didn’t want to let them down by walking

Do you do like a 9/1 ratio or something, or just do it as it suits the course and aid stations?

Absolute elevation not always the only story as well i guess. it depends on the nature and timing of the climbs.

I recall you advocating the run/walk when i joined TT for my first IM in Wales in 2013! Worked a treat

Another friend of mine has just had his email too…. what a dilemma… its a lot of money to risk, but its also the chance of a lifetime!

Not that its something that will ever happen to me, but I’d personally have to take the gamble and enter, or i’d live with the regret for the rest of my life.
