Expect the unexpected. Fail to plan, plan to fail. If it ain’t raining it ain’t training. Plans are nothing, planning is everything. Adapt improvise overcome.
I took all of my wet/spring/autumn weather gear to Outlaw 2019 (Castelli ROS) and survived.
Seeing as I drove up, I should’ve thrown a few extra items in and made the decision once in the car park…but didn’t want to get up to the tops and be sweating like a pig in an abattoir (or Covid-19 victim in self-isolation? Too soon?)
I was 50 seconds faster today (1:59:11 vs 2:00:01) but that’s probably a couple of traffic lights being on green, so I could carry speed through.
@Mungo2 - Signs were still out for your event just gone.
The wind was so strong, I was descending Sheephouse Lane at <40kmh with no brakes!
It’s a pretty easy descent with no parked cars, tourists, cyclists, runners or dog walkers.
I managed to keep off the brakes until the tea rooms (when the junction approaches RAPIDLY!)
Excuse my ignorance here, as i’ve clearly never been there. But why does Sheephouse have such a reputation? I was just looking at @Poet ride, and the steepest bit down the hill only appears to be like 10/11% for half a km or so. Then it flattens for a bit before another 7% or so for 5-600m. Is it much more twisty than it looks on a map? Because that doesn’t seem that bad?!
I compared it to an ‘ok’ hill near me that i rode a lot when training for IMW years ago. It’s smaller in total than Sheephouse (1.5k vs. 3ish) but is steeper overall. I’ve got a really shit bike and i’m not a great rider, but i sit about 236/6079 on the descent leaderboard. I’ve never climbed it in anger, but i languish in 860/3905, so much weaker relatively.
I’m not having a dig, i’m just intrigued as there’s a lot of chat about SH, so wanted to try to get an idea in real life what it’s like, hence comparing it to local hills.
There is a cattle grid, which scares people.
It’s wet and shaded with trees and is quite a poor road surface.
People park all the way up it for the reservoir and nice walks, so it’s a nightmare for recces.
There is another side to it, which I believe is “the steep part” at 14%.
On race day (being naive here), I’d expect to fly down Sheep House Lane, with no brakes and carry that speed all the way over the reservoir. At least on the first lap.
Because @Mungo2 gives it one (meant 100% best of spirits!)
It’s not that much to go up - It’s reputation as a climb is because of spectator support up there.
But the way it comes down on 2019 and 2020 IM route is pretty rough, has a cattle grid near bottom at high speed, and is fairly narrow for overtaking.
On training days it should be a fairly slow descent because there’s a very mild corner that you don’t need to slow down for on race day, but it’s blind with walls either side so can’t see cars, and a junction at the bottom.
It’s not terrible but on the third time with a lot of miles and other hills in your legs it gets a bit tough. Especially with a marathon in the back of your mind.
