Oh look, it’s still a farce
2.08.09 - all out on the road. 46 min 10k this morning.
Took me less time than the 3km run, to buy the finishers bundle at 39 euro and 14 euro postage.
There’s a future in this for them !
So now we have Ironman VC Challenger Division. Have to use Rouvy or Compete Outdoors. It still doesn’t eliminate cheating entirely, but I guess will make it more difficult.
I’ve not done any IM VR races, but could be tempted with this format
I see that. I haven’t done any of the virtual races yet either. Haven’t ran for 5 weeks! I think however that this is a sign that they are moving towards qualification slots based on virtual racing and the first 10-15 virtual races will the the trial and error phase until they have something semi-credible. If they do go down that route, I wonder will they charge people who want to compete and try to qualify. And also, they will be desperate for Kona in February to go ahead. Might they have virtual qualifying small print to protect themselves if it should be cancelled…?
Good news, and as predicted by yours truly . I might start looking for subs next.
No it doesnt really address cheating, its a light touch control which should reduce the cheating through ignorance but wont affect malicious actors much.
I might give in trying to figure out the best simulation for my olympic effort and just go with the IMVR duathlon format.
I did a Sprint Tri last bank holiday Monday and worked out an equivalent distance on the rowing machine that would roughly take my swim time. (3.1 miles takes about 15mins on my machine but that’s probably fairly meaningless other than for my own comparisons)
I figured it had an element of upper body work like swimming compared to just doing a another run.
Ps. I could have done 3 miles but I liked the fact that 3.1 is 5km and everything else is metric.
Ive requested they accept swim files for the first leg as well as run, for those of us that can swim and record it.
Might be worth putting in your feedback forms…
Have they introduced the consecutive legs yet or is it just Rouvy/Outdoors and the same otherwise?
I cant see anything about it, but they were talking about doing the legs on the same day way before this division was introduced.
Nope. We still have from Friday evening until Sunday night to complete, no matter if Classic or Challenger.
I am going to give it another go, if only to iron out the schoolgirl errors I made two weeks ago.
I will do it all consecutively on Saturday morning.
Cheating will still be rife, and it can NEVER be a qualifier. But the latest changes are a step in the right direction, and hats off to Ironman for keeping us motivated for free.
@joex are you well enough to take part this weekend?
I was considering it but Ive managed to get a swimming slot at a lake early saturday morning, and Im a little beat up from training this week.
I did the Boulder 5150 course on Rouvy yesterday though while I was doing an over/under session - spot the roadkill about a minute into the ride on the first uphill
Just downloading the Rouvy free trial for tomorrow. What could go wrong?
How did it go?
Im thinking about VR9 this weekend but not sure Ill be up for the run leg.
Good thanks. I like Rouvy, but I won’t be paying for a subscription.
That’s three IMVRs I’ve completed.
Fortunately, this weekend I have a virtual challenge with my running club to keep me occupied. Wouldn’t fancy a half marathon either. Good luck if you do it.
Thought this would happen: virtual qualification for world 70.3, wonder if Kona will be next… certainly for the 70.3 if they have 2 days of racing and each day can have 3000 athletes then they’ll do what they can to fill both days. South Africa and Taupo are remote from big affluent triathlon population centres and finding it hard to fill the races up (plus lots of cancelled qualifiers this year, but even so, Europe to NZ is a big costly trip…) whereas Nice had all of Europe on its doorstep and plenty of qualifying races so they had no problem filling it.
Not surprised they’re going down this route, but I am surprised they still think NZ will be letting in tourists in early 2021.
NZ have pretty much said they’re locking down the borders to all but Aussies for the foreseeable future
I can’t see that lasting long.
Agreed - they locked down early and hard and pretty much kept the virus out. It would seem odd if they then re-opened the borders without quarantine arrangements unless there’s a quick, reliable test that could be performed before immigration clearance, or a proven anti-body test.
As someone who’s booked flights to NZ with the hope of qualifying, I have no interest in trying this virtual qualification. Have long since assumed that it will be cancelled and not thought about it since.
Granted things might start changing, its still 5 months away which is a long time in COVID terms, in which case I might scramble around and try qualify, but for now it’s not on radar.
Just out of interest we are starting to do these at work now for staff, curious as to whether I’ve had it with no symptoms. Definitely had large exposure.
Is there a reliable antibody test now, and does it indicate only past disease or future resistance?
As much of an unknown about everything else regarding COVID. it’s reliable enough that it’s come through trials and into practice, but afraid I don’t know numbers. But the test for current covid is only 70% sensitive.
All I’ve heard about antibody test so far is that it should show if had infection more than 3 weeks previous.
It is very plausible (and initial stories I’ve heard also suggests) that antibodies should confer future immunity whether full or partial like other infections, but no one truly knows that yet as not been around long enough to see reliably that people don’t get re-infected.
