Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

That’s what Mrs GB said to me.

Wife asked how much they cost, I said £97.

She was muttering so loud I don’t think she heard me say “each”

You been out in them?

They are the Daddy of all shoes.
(Although it appears both of your feet would fit in one of mine :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

Enjoy.

Due to packing very light I wore the Alphas for the whole weekend at London (given the other half would have to carry everything around on the Sunday since we went on the train and weren’t staying Sunday night). I soon found they were pretty uncomfortable to walk in, I could really feel the carbon plate in my arch, and thought I’d made a massive mistake. Fortunately it didn’t get worse and cause issues, but definitely won’t make that mistake again.

As a forefoot runner I find them fine, but with 12km to go in the marathon I’d lost all pace and form and was heel striking, and again the plate was causing some discomfort in the arch.

I don’t plan to run a marathon again any time soon, but I think I’ll probably have to find another shoe for anything above HM.

I don’t recall having the same issues with the Vaporfly in Brighton a few weeks ago, where form was even worse.

They look great and I don’t really like the look of the Alphas!

Birthday code time. Not feeling that inspired though. Anyone tried the pegasus trial?

The trail 2’s? If so, yes I think they are excellent, bought a second pair, really comfy and better than I expected on most surfaces.

Trail 3s. The sale ones are currently cheaper than the discount anyway!

Alpha or next for marathons?
I’ve only worn Alphas for short distances, I’ve read thry can hurt after a while?

I was nervous about the Alphafly’s so used the Next’s yesterday, could feel them a bit towards the end but no blisters so would use them again.

For me I think the Next% are faster but the Alphas are more cushioned so you feel fresher for longer. When I needed to dig in on my 5km last weekend the Alphas seemed to absorb the effort but not give back if that makes sense? Where as I know if I kick hard or do reps in the Next you get the feedback you want.
I think the Alphas will be destined to be my marathon training shoe as they been used for only 150km.

Alphas.
Next feel flat and there’s no cushioning at the front (to me)

Next% are more a half and below shoe.

Consensus then? Alphas are more cushioned, depends if that is what you want from your marathon race shoe.

It does seem the Alphas have fallen out of favour at the elite end. Can’t believe Nike are pushing their athletes to run in the ‘cheaper’ shoe, so presumably it is athlete choice and most seem to be choosing the Next over the Alphas.

Nope.
No consensus at all.
Just buy them both, test them, then relegate the other pair to “fast training”

Don’t send one back, as they’re both great shoes and I’d say help you feel fresher and get that next session done easier.

This is what’s making me think about panic buying some Next before the weekend :see_no_evil:

I struggled to bottom out exactly which was the faster shoe (if there was an answer). Both were excellent racing shoes but I favored NEXT% purely because they were lighter and as a sub-3 runner I dont think the extra cushion was that valuable. If it was anything other than marathon id go NEXT over the alphafly no question. The marathon is just long enough to start wondering whether you go for a bit of cushion to get to the last miles fresher vs lowered metabolic cost of lighter shoes.

If I go for sub 2:30 next year I think ill try and get some treadmile time and maybe do some back to back 10 min efforts at MP to see what happens between the two. I read a paper recently comparing the super shoes which I read as the alpha could provide a marginal benefit over the next IF you were a strong responder but they also had a wider range of response so you could well have got no response vs the next which everyone benefitted from

Wow 2:30, another level!

I bought Alpha’s as soon as I could, I have had not had problems in them to the extent that I ran a 100k race in them in May. They are great and I really want them to be the fastest shoe.
To keep up with the Joneses, this thread and people over here I bought some NEXT 2 last April or so. In a funny way I really wanted them to be slower, but I am not sure they are and set my 5k pb in the next despite having trashed legs. So not much help really, other than to agree with Poet that they are both great shoes…
