I tried out my new Alphaflys for the first time today. Hmm. Not sure yet. They felt OK, but maybe not quite as bouncy as I imagined. Almost a bit too cushioned, initial impression is that I prefer the vaporflys. Also my Achilles felt a bit twingey after.
Will be wearing them for a half marathon on Sunday, guess that will be a good test for them.
After giving my ASICS Meta Speed Sky a good test on my usual 3 x 1 mile set I can confirm that using the ASICS I am 3s per km quicker compared to the Nike Next%. Strangely enough I thought I was slower just going on perception but the data does not lie….
The other day, I did a track 3k TT with my club. I remembered the post run beer, but forgot my NEXT2’s. So I rang a mate who has about 9 pairs of super shoes, he brought down a selection and I used his metaspeeds. They were tight, like really tight, but managed to squeeze in them
My aim was a sub 10 and I came in at 9:59:76, although I stopped my watch slightly after the finish line.
I would have been aiming for the same in the NEXT2’s so they are definitely the only ones that seem to be at least comparable. I am running a 5k TT Saturday, must remember the NEXT as well as the beer
Ran in the Alphaflys on Sunday. Half marathon. It was only their 2nd outing, their first was a steady trot around town last Tuesday.
Impressions:
Comfort 5/5. Not even a hint of a rub or blister.
Cruising speed: 5/5. in the first 10km I felt like I had to hold back. They made me want to run at a pace I felt would have been suicidal. However, there was a strong tail wind so maybe that’s a factor. And I guess current fitness, recent training etc feed into the equation too. All I can say for sure is that a certain pace felt more comfortable than I have ever known.
Walk on water: 4/5. Much of the course was waterlogged, especially in the 2nd half. The shoes just sink into puddles like normal shoes. No aquaplaning or miracles. However, when soaked through they didn’t feel appreciably heavier.
Small man syndrome: 4/5. They make you feel massive, almost like wearing stilts. Maybe this helps you run faster? However I wonder if this comes at a cost. In the second half of the race my hamstrings started to tighten up, which I have never had before. Reckon this slowed me by about 20-30 seconds per km in the last 5 km. And the DOMS is declaring itself today. I wouldn’t normally expect this so think it might have something to do with the effect of the high stack on biomechanics? I guess one solution would have been to actually train in them too. But at £196 per pair I’m considerably too tight fisted.
Overall: 5/5. Best shoes I have ever worn for running 10km+. Looking forward to trying them out on a dry day soon.
That’s the surprising comment for me. Lack of DOMS is probably my most significantly noticeable effect of wearing any of the full ZoomX shoes. The only full marathon I’ve run in them, I was absolutely fine later that day. And the days after. Not a hint of DOMS. Which was unheard of for me previously.
