Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

The first did seem to stick around for a while but these others are quick but of course, they have the trail versions as well, which might make it seem more.

Agreed, but Brooks seems to have pulled their carbon shoe from the UK website.

Even Decathlon have one!

Someone else might want to put in the leg work for how often and for how many years I’ve been procrastinating/trolling this thread.

But finally:

It’s been so long I’m not even enjoying the purchase. It’s like finally having a tooth fixed. The nagging pain has gone away but there is no joy.

I’ve ran in Brooks shoes for well over 10 years.

I’ve noticed, certainly since 2019, the standard has slipped. They are either a poor shoe, or the shoe shows signs of wear prematurely (the exception is the Hyperion Tempo, non carbon speed shoe which is very good).

I’ve been hunting around for my next purchase, a pair of ā€˜plodders’ to replace the Ghost, and the top end race shoe.

ASICS are highly rated, as discussed here, but all roads seem to lead to Nike.

Thoughts on the Pegasus as a daily trainer? Reviews look good but that’s only half the story. Anyone had any pain points in general with Nike shoes, particular around the calf / Achilles?

Ace. But not at £140.
Wait until they go in the sale, then wait again until it’s 25% off. Paid Ā£44.87 for my last pair :joy:

I’ve got a few pairs. I like the ā€œshieldā€ version for winter running. Generally use a ā€œposhā€ version for when it’s dry (old 4% or Next%)

The lacing is a bit of a pain to get right, can cause my side foot to ache. But once that’s dialled in they’re fine.

You’ve got a treadmill, right?
Just order a pair and use them on that until you know, then send them back if they don’t work for you.

You need a nice collection to rotate through…

They’re a decent pair of trainers, I’ve got through half a dozen pairs of them. I find them fine up to about 10km, but anything longer I’m putting on a pair of Zoom Fly.

As @Poet says don’t be paying Ā£140 for Pegs, you should be able to pick them up for nearer to Ā£60 when offers are around.

I keep promising myself to try Asics - I used to love them - but they never discount & Nike keep sucking me in.

Intriguing…why is that?
For the cushioning on the Zoom Fly?
Or the fake speed flattery

I’ve not owned a pair of Zoom Fly, as just tend to run in my older pairs of cheat shoes instead :see_no_evil:

Do ASICS at Cheshire Oaks not do good discounts?
I’m just fully sucked into Nike now; I know what size I am, I know that they work, I don’t get blisters or chafing from them and I can send them back if I do!

Absolutely the cushioning with the Flys I don’t think they’re any faster. When run/tri training I’ll only be going over 10km once a week & given a choice I’ll be doing that off-road & - in what seems to be a minority - I love my Wildhorse.

I could possibly get Asics - sorry, ASICS - cheaper at CO, but can only force myself there once a year or so…prols innit  .

Damn Nike & their discounting

Another yes for Pegasus, I’ve had achilies issues previously but not with these. Currently rotating a few series 36 and 37s all bought at discount times and am fine up to and over 20 miles in them.

I tried asics a few years ago but found the heel came up a bit too high causing tenderness on the achilies (didn’t notice it on the shop treadmill unfortunately). Took a scalpel to them and lowered it and things were ok.

Thanks all, that’s really helpful.

Also @Poet, I get grief about the amount of concurrent pairs of running shoes in my collection. It’s nothing compared to you old boy.

And size 11? #humblebrag

Thanks @Symes for the feedback on calf/Achilles pain. Mine are made of glass so good to know.

No worries!
Do you not have a garage or outhouse?
Just stick them all in there.
So long as my stuff is out of the way, I don’t get any grief :+1:t3:
Although, my town bike is now in the basement, as the outhouse is full of solid fuel…finger is also hovering over a new bike :joy::see_no_evil:
Might get some stick for that!

I’ll be returning to Nike after being diagnosed with a tendinopathy. Nothing in my training has changed this year but the switch from Nike to ASIC. I know Saucony didn’t work for me and they gave me problems so I’ll be hunting out shoes to rebuild my collection.

Another reluctant plus one for Nike. Hate that I love them, but I do - probably had 10 pairs now. Have probably run over 5,000kms in pegs now starting at 31s to current. Though when I bought my air zoom tempo nexts, the pegs have been relegated to occasional use as I just love the tempos.

Like @Doonhamer I tend to wear my pegs now for easy runs under an hour. Everything else in the tempos. Just had the notification to say I’ve just hit 800km mark and they’re not showing any signs of slowing down. They’re certainly not feeling flat. Got them on big discount, so pound for pound they’re proving excellent value

Used to wear saucony until they changed the shape so I ditched them. I just know Nike will fit me, so as much as I’d like to try others out, it’s too much of a gamble. Though I have had success with NB in the past.

I have my bike and a few bits in the garage, but it’s just easier to keep the other pair of running shoes close to the door.

You’ve seen what time I run, can’t be rummaging around at 4:30 in the morning.

You could go to bed wearing them?

I’m pretty sure he does :bangbang:

Interesting. I’ve worn Saucony for many years and I’ve noticed the same. They don’t last at all. Was thinking of swapping to Brooks. Need to have another think i guess

I think their business model has evolved to a different type of consumer. They are seemingly not going after ā€˜performance’ athletes.

Rather your very average American who may run infrequently. The ghost is always highly rated, and I’d recommend as an all round shoe. But again possibly lasted me 250 miles with obvious signs of use.

They are meant to be releasing a new model later this year.

My latest Saucony Rides I’ve had about 6 months. Ran very infrequent, although worn them daily to walk. The entire front sole has worn away, almost right through. The uppers have holes in and the heel bit has collapsed. Appreciate im heavier than most but these seem very fragile

I’ll be very much in the minority here.
Tried a couple of versions of the Pegasus and the tempo (?). Really wanted to like them but just weren’t right for me.

I still rate the Brooks ghost as the worst shoe Ive ever brought.

A lot of the ASICS fit me really well but find the nimbus and the cumulus in particular really clumpy.
Really like my evorides but not enough for a daily.

Got put onto those Reebok floatrides earlier in the year. Absolute bargain at 40 notes in the sale. They run a fraction big on me. Crazy light and springy for the price.

The sizing issue of the Reebok’s kept me looking and I’ve gone back to the saucony endorphins. First pair had 400 miles on… No early degradation on version 2.
Picked up for Ā£90… Not ideal for a daily. But find I can use them for any session, great in the wet, fit perfectly etc.
