Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

After 82km hasn’t half their life been used up? Not much good if you have to wear them in for that length of time!

Ikea need to test them with that machine that ‘pumps’ their chairs

this is just my opinion on a massively extended test run in them.

Yes - massively annoying.
My german pair are arriving any second now…

Well, that’s 98km in the Next% and I finally warmed up to them.
I would definitely buy these for a marathon over the 4%. The comfort and fit is worth it, for people running 2:55-3:00.
Under 2:50 and you should just put up with it and use the 4%.

They’re now on their way back to Nike.

Last run was 10 miles at marathon pace, resulting in this:

Easy running week coming up, which will allow that to heal…

…then the Pegasus Zoom 36 will arrive and I can test those for y’all :+1:t3::see_no_evil:

Eww, that’s nasty for a 10 miler; is that from the edge of the midsole?

You should definitely get shares in Nikey

… yet you say the shoe is growing on you?! Growing into you more like!!! Multiply that by a marathon and it ain’t gonna be pretty.

Did some km reps in the ZFs today. They’re breaking in a little and i’m enjoying them. Still don’t think they are a race shoe though! Will be intrigued with your impression on the Peg Turbos though … especially if they start knocking them off at £55 as well!!!

Yes, even with the blister - I’ve really warmed to them.
It’s a lukewarm feeling, not the intense burn I get from the 4%.
They’re a solid shoe that are quick.

No blister after the midweek 30km at all.
That developed today, but my feet might have been moistened from the dip in the lake this morning?

And yes - it’s from where the midsole bit sort of wraps up around the shoe.
That part of my foot is really susceptible to it; to the point I can’t wear (or used to) ASICS/Mizuno or any other shoe with a hard logo stitched into the upper.

Got to wait for the funds back from the Next%, then I’ll order the Pegs :+1:t3:

Mightily impressed with Nike’s returns process. Sent the zooms back on Wednesday and just received the confirmation that the refund has been processed.

First run in Next%

Went for size 43 in Next %, I was 44 in 4%. Feels but better round heel and still plenty of space in toe box

Much more support than 4%, less strain on ankle, and more secure running round corners

Feels faster on gravel / uneven surfaces

Where these shine for me is running downhill, they are simply the best shoe I have ever tried running downhill

In terms of speed, really difficult to say, I ran 15km @ 4:26m/km which felt good, but I am still recovering from last weekend’s Quadrathon, so not able to push hard. I don’t think that they are significantly faster than the 4% but are an improvement in stability

WOW! That’s the total opposite of my experience.
I found as soon as you came off the black grip and onto that white foam at the rear, they were garbage.

Another Parkrun this morning.
Have done 2 in the 4%s and one in the Next.

I prefer the Nexts

To me the Next just are taunting you to run faster than the 4%s
Did two 9.5 milers (to work and home) on Thursday in the Next and from the first step I was having to slow myself down.

Going to save them for a 70.3 in a few weeks and then some running races I care about later in the year.

The 4%s might be just for Parkrun.
Fly’s and a new pair of Pegs for training

Nice to hear the other side of the story
(Even though your opinion is wrong :wink::see_no_evil:)

But honestly, what Pegs?
I’m going to order the Zoom 36 Turbo 2s for a trial.

Did a brick run this afternoon in zoom flys. I see why @Jorgan is tempted by them for hamburg. With fatigued legs they somehow felt more sprightly than earlier in the week and I actually ran unexpectedly fast. The big difference to 4% is stability. They don’t have the same pop, but still felt good and when tired you can be a bit less concerned about form.

From what I’m reading about the NEXT% they maybe are the best of both worlds.

I’ll probably look at some NEXT% for my next marathon, but for 70.3 I’ll stick with the 4%. Actually managed to pick up another pair of 4% in my size off ebay yesterday for £65 delivered with (apparently) only 30k on them. At that price, they’ll work as a 5k race shoe regardless

Flyknits - Captain Obvious says “They’re not great on sand”:rofl::see_no_evil:

The zoom flyknits do not seem to be on the app anymore :disappointed_relieved:

I tried my flyknit’s on Friday, thought they were a bit wobbly at the back TBH, although I didn’t mind them. Will need to do a slightly longer run on them at some point.

Tempted by the next% for a marathon given the feedback, but it’s an expensive game!

Jeff

I used the NEXT% at a 10km today. I had thought it was road run around a country estate but turns out to be ‘multi terrain’. Apart from the mud on the wood land paths the shoes held up on the farm tracks and rough stuff. Wear is also minimal compared to the 4%. I think they are my show of choice from now on.

A word of warning on super shoes…

I had ran myself into the fittest I had been for the Gold Coast marathon, like always, my final fast run was a parkrun the Saturday before. I wore the 4%'s, the start is slightly downhill,
I have surmised due to the extra bounce, the slight downhill and my pushing for a pb meant I extended my leg too far and jiggered my hamstring. (2 of the 3 seems to be ok as I do that each week somewhere)

Started the marathon, but had to pull out at 8k when I was being swamped by the sub 3 pacer and followers and the hammy was fatiguing. Am pretty gutted about the whole thing.

Now in rehab, trying to work out where another flat marathon is in the southern hemisphere later in the year.

Having run down a load a mountains the previous weekend, it is possible that I improved my downhill running technique. However, my Quads were still pretty painful when I did the run; there a a couple of downhill sections, and I felt that the foam under the heal was really absorbant, meaning that I got very little jarring through my legs.
