Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

Fantastic time. With other runners around you a sub-16 must be within sight.

That is absolutely flying @itom150 I missed that on Strava.

Sub 16 has got to be a massive carrot now surely.

Really impressive

sub-16 would be a big goal. Feel like its within reach and like doonhamer said if had a few more runners around me who im confident were running an even 15:50 or so I probably wouldn’t have gone through the first km in 2:49 only to realise at 1.1 km I wasn’t in sub-15 shapešŸ˜‚

On an ideal course with other runners on the right day feel like could be on. Don’t think id go far south of 16 though so it would have to be one of those days where everything comes together!

My mate over here, runs exclusively in 4%/Next%, (he has 4 pairs, 2 of each). In fact he downsized recently from a house to a flat and his wife has now insisted that he is only allowed 5 pairs of running shoes at any one time , he ended up giving my wife an almost brand new pair of Nike Pegs that didn’t make the cut… Anyhow, I digress…

He is up to over 1800k in his first pair of 4%'s he reckons, mainly training runs, still going strong. Its worth pointing out that he is pretty light around 65kg I think.

As for me I am not quite so decadent, but my 4%'s must be nearing 1000k of pure racing. ie all running has been hard in them. This is from 5k-> marathon and everything in between, not sure how much bounce they have lost but pre lockdown I was still getting under 17min for a 5k

So @YKK let me get this right.

Are you saying don’t believe the marketing guff from Nike, that may or may not be driven by their desire to get you to buy shoes. That these shoes may actually last longer than 250km?!

My brain hurts. Who to believe…

I’m sure the shoes last longer, all running shoes do generally, what happens is the foam loses its springiness, and with the amount of foam here I expect it’s significant. So if you’re looking to cover your feet to run in, they’ll last ages. If you’re looking to artificially improve your performance, use new ones.

Given Blu is a Nike sponsored athlete, this is intriguing…

yeah, pretty bad when your sponsors shoes are so bad you need to wear others just for photoshoots…

lol
 That’s certainly one interpretation!

Strangely, I now see in the preceding instastory post he is clearly wearing original NEXT%, so not sure what the blacking out is then for.

Pretty brutal bike workout someone has done on trainerroad on the left!

He appears to have loose shorts on in the post with the Next%

Then Lycra shorts in the blacked out ones.

Could be he’s using a prototype shoe?

My monies on a pair of Clifton Edges

My first thought was that @Poet is going to get slipper envy.

From what I see over here, they definitely last way over the 250. What is not clear is how long they last with highest levels of zip. I guess it depends on how important that pb is is to achieve vs cost vs slowing with age! I was definitely planning on trying to get some alphaflys when I was meant to be over in the UK.

Note everyone I know who is using them a lot is 71kg and under (me being the 71). I think you run a lot of the trails, that may smash them up a bit more, my 800ish k is all on the road will a smidge on the track.

Why Clifton Edge?

Dunno, seen a lot of buzz about them on various social platforms

No need pal!
I’m sorted. image

I could scroll back up somewhere, but for those who have both, how much faster are the NEXT over the 4’s?

My plan had to be skip the NEXT and try and get a pair of Alpha’s, but they don’t seem to be coming out anytime soon over here. So I may bite the bullet and buy some NEXT, which no doubt will mean the Alpha’s will become available the next week…

I think the answer is ā€œit dependsā€. The biggest difference for me was stability. The NEXT% are much more secure at the rear, which makes cornering a lot easier. WHilst the NEXT% still feel great, the 4% definitely feel more springy than the NEXT% just walking around.

Personally, I had a pair or two of 4% still hanging around, so saved my NEXT% for my 2020 IM marathons (now both cancelled) after the 2019 marathon they were bought for, and had used the 4% for an early season HM this year, and continued to use 4% for 70.3’s last year as well. I’m less concerned by the relative increase in instability over 21k

Great reply

I’m also firmly in the ā€œit dependsā€ camp.

I used my UK11.5 4% for the Outlaw marathon, in the wet, and they were a total dream.
A few weeks prior, I’d ran a 10k in Next% and just didn’t get on with them.
It was that ā€œspringinessā€ I missed.
Even if it was psychological, I wanted that mental comfort.

RE: Cornering
I came a cropper in the UK11 4% I have at the 113 last year leaving T2 :rofl::see_no_evil:
Foot just totally went from under me as I was cornering in the wet (swim exit dampness from a later wave)

I now use my UK11 for 10km and under and the UK11.5 for 21km and up.

Picked up a pair of Terra Kiger 6s from the Nike app last week for £63.

Ropey colour scheme was discounted now back at full price. They look much better IRL

Got them sent to a mates house and picked them up this evening @Poet  hence the 17 meters gained
