4 Parkruns in just over 2 weeks

NYD ParkRun, no hangover, but no warmup. 21:29 is just about acceptable.

Target is sub 20 by end of Jan

I had the honor of holding the sign indicating where to run for the end of the first lap and for the final lap, which sounds very simple, but my wife deciding she didn’t want to run with the baby, so had to try and keep him happy which involved trying to judge when I could drop the sign to stick a dummy back in his mouth. 3 people left tops with me, one even hanging it on the buggy.

EDIT: I had another very chatty marshal with me and she mentioned that when I ran on 30th December we had a celebrity guest, Joe Wilkinson, and I must have run past him given I started late and ended up ahead of him (unless he started even later). Coincidentally he lives and usually runs in Brighton which is my home town, I think has now run 4 times in Swindon, I guess he must have some connection to here.

Never heard of him :joy:

After running the other day and chatting to another runner, who was then bar code scanning, he was telling me the logistics of his Boxing Day bonus parkrun in Poland (which involved a flight out of Luton on Christmas Day evening). Last year I ran on Norway’s bonus day, kind of out of the blue, as we’re really not parkrun tourists. But the seed has kind of been planted to try something again.

This year the Nordic countries all have their bonus run on the same day, Thursday 9th May (Ascension). When doing a tiny bit of research I came across fact that there is also a half marathon in Helsinki on Saturday 11th May which starts at 2pm. The plan is to run somewhere in the Nordics on the Thursday, then get to Espoo (Puolarmaari), Finland on Saturday morning (Espoo is the closest one to Helsinki, which is cancelled due to the half marathon), and then get to Helsinki for the half. There’s an added challenge/risk that the Espoo parkrun only runs outside of the XC skiing season, which has gone on to late April some years.

He’s a comedian, probably most famous for being on 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown. Given the character he plays you really wouldn’t expect him to do parkrun.

I did a nice one in Finland last year but it was about 140k from Helsinki as I did it near Lahti.

There is one in Lahti which has a train link from Helsinki.

Thanks. Lahti is the backup plan if Espoo isn’t running. I think it was just over an hour on the train vs 25 mins for Espoo. Given you need to pick up your bib on the day at least an hour before the run, every minute will probably count (plus will likely have the baby with us).

Probably rules out the other venue then unless you hire a car. Can’t remember it’s name but a lovely course along a canal that linked a huge lake on both sides.

Winchester parkrun cancelled for Saturday. Last week was muddy enough and it ain’t got any drier!

At that’s a bugger. Where’s the next nearest? Down onto the south coast? Romsey?

Eastleigh I think and to the north there is Greenham Common but suspect there would be a closer one than that. I won’t bother though, need to get another long one in Saturday anyway.

Eastleigh was the first Parkrun I completed back in 2010. I was dragged round by a mate with his dog who kept nipping my ankles.

Didn’t do another one until 2018!

I’ve never been but I hear it’s a narrow course?

I honestly can’t remember, certainly nothing to write home about

That sums up Eastleigh in general.

Looks like Eastleigh is off too if you were considering it. Plenty of others around Southampton, or Andover and Amazingstoke to the North.
