Montrose st is absolutely rammed. Rowdy groups of Danes, Norwegians, Belgians etc - all drunk lol

Bit random selection. Phone reception is shit here

Quite a few guys dropping out. Saw a few guys really suffering on the climb - they got an almighty roar. A lone Norwegian glided up just now and cupped his hand to his ear - got an almighty cheer the whole way up. Great atmosphere

That bike course is giving me the yips through the city on those wet roads and tight corners :grimacing:

Its been an amazing course and race, no wonder the pros are moaning, because its creating a proper hard race where anything can happen and is not easily controlled

It’s been fantastic and the crowds are amazing. Proud of this city

Superb

170 miles in just over 6hrs. The winner almost lost his lead, then chase pack settled for second place scrap.

Great crowds today.

I suspect he knew what he had to do, and that is the pace he went at. Just didn’t know if he could hold it!
Ganna always finishes strong, his fastest laps in the hour were towards the end, he does virtually the whole last km of the Team Pursuit on the front. Bigham probably knows that better than most.

Amazing. Great shots. Got the full extent of the madness on the climbs. The art school was hilarious. Every lap it got busier, rowdier and the space for the riders got narrower!

We opted for a spot near one of the big screens to watch the laps. But the feed was about 2 mins behind so it got quite confusing… Was amazing how the chase group just reeled in the Italian and then the Dutch chap made his move on the climb. Absolutely decimated them.

The atmosphere yesterday was something else. I wasn’t about for the 2014 games etc - overall it’s been very impressive

On the BBC today, not read it all yet and I guess most of it is already documented.

Before I followed cycling much tbh but I’m not sure I get why people loathed Armstrong but loved this guy despite them both being cheats :man_shrugging:t2:

Possibly the attitude of Lance, and really don’t want to reignite that whole debate!

I listened to the podcast series - Sports Strangest Crimes. Goes into detail on all the conspiracy theories around Pantani, but if I was to add my uneducated theory, the likes of Pantani, Ulrich etc never came to terms with their cheating, and their post-career suffered as a result. To Lance, it was never cheating, just part of the game. He still gives interviews today where he admits he would do the same again.

Matt Rendell’s book on Pantani is really good and goes into the conspiracies around his death.

Everyone loved Lance when he started winning. We all bought the book and lapped up the cancer survivor story.

It was only when the winning streak went on that stories started to come out that called into question his cleanness and highlighted his controlling nature. People also got bored with the same guy winning every year and the style of racing.

Pantani was majestic to watch in his hay day. He was so different in style to Indurain, Riis and Ulrich. He also comes across as a more fragile character, probably manipulated by team managers etc. I think he was part of an institutional doping program run by the Italian Olympic committee :man_shrugging:

I think Ulrich suffered after he finished, not sure if it was the change of lifestyle or the previous cheating.
