Project 21

So my Parjrun stats say that I was 15th at Keswick in 2019 with 21:09. Covid has a lot to answer for.

Despite it being a glorious but cold day yesterday, we were too tired to do much so opted for a 1k swim in the baby pool with gratuitous use of the pull buoy.

And today was a 3 hour 18 min walk up and down Helvellyn from Thirlmere…

Very icy in parts, a freezing breeze on top and a Brocken spectre to enjoy on the way down…,

When Saturday comes…

Last Saturday i was dragged out of bed at some ungodly hour to do the city centre Parjrun. Because all others were cancelled, this was mobbed with runners…but my lungs remain the real limiter and somehow my 26:48 is not my slowest ever…

A rare swim with MrseJC on Monday followed by a club training run on Thursday and another swim on Friday.

It was club mate Bernie’s 70th birthday on Saturday and so we all ran the local Parjrun despite the icy conditions. Anyway, i ran 26:16 in my Newtons which help with running form - i find the Hoka carbons too clunky…

So, in a rash moment of excitement, Mrs eJC and I have entered a 70.3…

Surely Oman?? Down Salalah way - part of Oman we didn’t get to on our trip there.

Hence my joke about being very western….you’d pretty much have to circumnavigate the globe to get there from Sudan…

yes…Oman. We were in Muscat last year…

Thank you

How’s it going for you?

No change for me - need to get out the door more, probably going to have to stop thinking about cycling to do that though.

I think I’ll run everyday for the next seven days, I’m sure that will have the optimal outcomes ongoing for the rest of the year.

I never did have a pop at a 5km before the end of 2025.

Did a 22:15 about the 6th January in a 6 or 7km.

I’ve done a 22:5x and a 22:4x in training in the last month.

21:xx

Is actually harder than our younger selves or generally many would think.

I dunno, amongst casual runners a 21 is considered pretty decent.

I went 21.25 in the first 5k of Cambridge Half, that came back to bite me later on :man_facepalming:

You are correct, I guess my comment has a bit of bias. Most of us here probably know many people better than the average causal runner, and looking back to the good old days it easy to look at times that could be run daily (or weekly) and forget or not fully comprehend much work it takes now.

I was a bit of 100m runner and field events, long, triple and high jump and the occasional cross-country (which I didn’t really enjoy, explosive events were more fun and I was better at them)
I never really did a 5km in my prime, my PR was during Rugby training not an official race and hadn’t trained for it. Most years in pre-season training we’d run (a majority on the backs) a 19:xx or 20:xx 5km once a week prior to a technical session.

Enjoyed it once I got into it

Club run with Mrs eJC

6.9k. 48 mins.

8 reps of approx 350m up slight slope, 350m active recovery.

Went too hard on the 2nd rep in the hope of kickstarting my lungs but never really into it. Mrs eJC kicked my butt.
