Open Water swimming groups on Facebook, you always get the one prick “that’s not wild swimming , my pond i jump in and flap about is much better” FFS we are inundated with well run, lifeguarded OW swimming venues now, and people moan that its not “wild” enough. You want wild go to the Amazon and swim with the piranhas or join Fruity with the sharks.

There’s no such thing as wild swimming. It’s just swimming outdoors.

Drives me insane! :joy:

“I’m a wild swimmer” , no you ain’t you go to the beach every morning and play in the waves for 10 minutes before sitting eating cake and drinking tea for half an hour.

That’s what the wild swimmer in my team does but she admits it’s just ‘bobbing about’.

A girl was getting changed at the harbour here an hour ago, she got in and floated around for about 5 minutes. I was freezing just watching

My team member says she wears a bobble hat.

She loves it though, has a good social circle through it. Not doing any harm I guess.

Great for mental health, non athletic physical health and circulation apparently…?!!

Next to useless for tri and ows comps ( cold acclimatisation I guess!)

The three I know swim in the sea all year round they don’t actually swim much at all.

My mate and his wife actually swim outside every Friday all year round… full break the ice if they have too!

They do have all the gear though

I don’t have a problem with the bobbing and dipping. There are heaps of proven benefits to it, especially the cold water stuff.

but it doesn’t need a name!! It’s not wild. It’s just outside. People have been swimming in bodies of water since time immemorial!

And breathe.

Anyone who doesn’t believe in “wild swimming” has never seen my attempts at butterfly, arms and legs thrashing about wildly.

Yeah, I would take “wild swimming” to be just jumping in a river or lake and swimming without getting any specific permission to do so.

If it’s an organised swimming venue then it’s pretty tame :rofl:

I see wild swimming as the type of swimming where you take your chance with whatever critters are out there. A sort of Russian roulette type of swimming.

There are times when it’s OK to do, such as when your boat has capsized and sunk and you are alone in the ocean.

Otherwise, it’s a bit like choosing, say, wild polio instead of the polio vaccine. Or adopting a wildcat instead of a domestic cat.
