I could have entered if i hadn’t spent so much on deliveroo last month
Making more friends @Poet
It’s not a race, “spare a thought for those just trying to cross the finish line”
I’ve seen your IMJ post about numbers under wetties etc and I’m in comms with one of the IMUK TOs trying to clarify
a) can Nopinz numbers be worn under wetsuit? So far have established that they ask numbers to go into bike bags so they can’t be worn in the swim but obvs Nopinz are a slightly different thing
b) if you need a rear number for the bike leg. some IM don’t, some do. WT don’t use bike numbers for age group champ events - only for the run.
I can confirm race is under WTC rules not BTF
EDIT: just heard answer to b) is yes - you need a rear bike number
Yes. He seems to have made one friend in particular.
Must really like @Poet. Always chips in on his posts
Edit - sorry, I’ve read that back as reading it’s you. I meant there’s some other chap he seems to have ticked off and now attempts to troll Poet at any given chance
Cheers @fatbuddha - yeah, I saw that 2018 athlete guide requires numbers on the bike.
But nothing in the athlete pack about wearing them under the wetsuit.
I’ve been absolutely savaged for asking a simple question about one or two race numbers
Then people don’t read about the NoPinz pocket and start talking about a belt. FFS.
That “Kirsty” person has a real chip on their shoulder.
For me, it’s one less thing to think about in T1 and will save me ~15 seconds. Which could matter.
Yeah. Apparently you’re stupid?!
Fucking tools should read the question.
For what it’s worth I think it’s a pretty valid question.
Had always wondered about a nopinz pocket. I’ve bought one of their belts now
OK - here are your answers.
-
You need a number on your back for the bike leg, on the front for the run leg.
-
Whilst numbers shouldn’t be worn under the wetsuit, you’re OK if you have a trisuit with a Nopinz pocket for the number - that’s allowed. Otherwise, numbers go in bike bags and put on in T1.
-
WTC rules apply
while I only have a specific answer for the trisuit with a Nopinz pocket, I would suggest that the belt is left in the bike bag as per other numbers.
If you have a Nopinz tri suit, what do you do for the run, don’t you need your number on the front?
correct - you still have to slip a number belt on for the run so the number can be seen from the front.
Why are people getting so heated on FB about race numbers? Sounds like most of them should be focussing on training to get around the full course.
does seem a bit crazy fussing over something, that if you manage it correctly, should only take a few seconds
Ah…but it could save ~4 minutes over the IM course versus a flappy number belt.
Plus, for me, it’s one less thing to think about and it’ll cover my ass crack

So what’s the beef people have with you? Or is it that people are very thinned skinned on IMJ, when someone offers advice?
Or is @Poet being Poet?!
Yeah, I think @Jorgan is trolling
I’m not trolling, I’m wondering why IMJers get stirred up so easily.
I’m being me

Very matter of fact.
I don’t think they like people at At the “pointy end” of the race.
“It’s not a race”

Tell that to someone who’s trying to finish the bike by 4:30pm.
@Matthew_Spooner chimed in with some excellence
@jorgan - I asked for advice. “Do we get one number or two? I’d like to use my NoPinz aero pocket under my wetsuit. Thanks I’m advance”
“ Don’t overthink it mate. Unless you’re looking to break records you can spend a lot of time in transition chilling out, having a snack (even a cup of tea or coffee). From memory you get two numbers and a few stick on ones for the bike. ”
“ I seem to remember them saying you mustn’t put numbers on under wetsuit (don’t think they are made as well as they used to be!) ”
Which is fine - but there is nothing in any rules I’ve read which say this to be the case.
“You’re arguing with people!”
Erm. No I’m not.
“ How long is it going to take you to step into your Nopinz belt in T1? It’s it going to make a massive amount of difference to your finish time? If you’re aiming to rush out of transition in (what I assume will be your first) full distance Ironman then you’re a fool. Take your time. Take the time to eat, drink and make yourself comfy. It’s a long day after the swim… you’re asking a rookie question and making yourself look stupid. I know what a NP pocket is and if you use a Tri suit with one on you should know it won’t make a difference if you put it under your wet suit or not. Tell you what, do you what you want. You seem to be questioning everyone’s responses here anyway.”
WTAF

“ They definitely have in the race guide every Ironman race. No number under wetsuit. Easy to spot in T1 and could lead to being disqualified, I wouldn’t risk it. Anyways wait until the new 2021 race guide comes out in a month.”
Linked to the athlete guide, not a mention of it.
“Stop arguing with people”
I am not arguing, I being incredibly factual
“ Unless you have a custom made Tri suit that was created using wind tunnel data it will make almost zero difference
Make life easier for yourself by using a race belt
”
Erm…independent study at Cambridge shows they save ~4mins over IM distance.
“Stop arguing with people”
“4 minutes is nothing over 5+ hours”
Eh??? Erm…those four minutes may be the difference between someone making the cut off or not.
I am trying to be cordial and nice

I think people some are intimidated.
I tend to only go on the IMUK one, the multinational ones start to sound like slow twitch… pretty awful in generic chat.
George Samuel is rapidly improving and got real grief for putting training times up, 16 min 5 k… ! fat people who put up they have broke 30 for the first time get good Jaaab and all that crap.
There both equally worthy of praise and I’m sure they both tried there best.
I don’t understand the internet sometimes
IMJ is massively biased towards beginners and a lot of one and dones. There is an obsession with new bikes, bike fits, Tailwind and coaching, that is not to say that there isn’t a place for these aspects. As soon as you are at the pointy end, apparently you lose the right to empathize with beginners… which is stupid as we have all been beginners and some of us have gradually moved to the front of the field, but no our advice is of no value, whereas someone with multiple failures, repeated mediocrity, and personal rip tides are the kings if IMJ
