Totally agree, I went through the shorter distances as well. There are some exceptions, I know a lady in Wales, who reasonably fit, but couldn’t swim, she learned how to swim and did an IM as her first Tri and qualified for Kona, however, I think she worked bloody hard to do it (and a lot of blood , sweat and tears). It’s the one and done’s who want to an IM with absolute min effort that get me
I am not judging these people as everyone has their own priorities and issues that can change from entering, to the time of the event itself. But I don’t understand why you would be dong these things with so little preparation. It won’t be fun out there.
Ive never understood this lot. Spend 500 quid for an event and then put next to no effort in. I cant swim hahaha. Right, so learn then. I couldnt swim very well when I started so I had some coaching, worked hard and could swim really well after a while.
You dont have to go mad and train 20 hour weeks but some people seem to revel in the fact they do nothing.
These people need to FIX UP. They’re going to give triathletes a bad rep
There does seem to be this odd prestige of winging it with no training with this type of person though.
See it all the time on the Wales journey group turn up with feck all training - no idea why they put themselves through it
90 miles in 4 hours would make him a really strong cyclist and would suggest a good level of overall fitness.
90km in 4 hours would be less so
This far out with 90 miles in 4 hours they could reasonably expect to get the full distance well inside 5h30, all they have to do is beat the swim cut off and they’ll have near 9 hours to complete the marathon assuming they don’t spend an hour in T1/T2
That dude has gone off the rails now, looks like a total BS merchant - a troll from ST maybe.
FTP 122…
Seen this. There is no consistency at all in anything he writes. One moment he’s done a 90 mile ride in 4 hours, a day later, he’s not ridden since last year.
FTP 122, but can hold 300w for 0.3miles (I guess about 1 min), which would suggest FTP of at least 220.
I offered to help, and he could probably salvage the race, but needs to get serious. I think that he has found a 220 triathlon 3 months plan. I guess if he follow this, might get round under cut off
A 144km ride in 4 hours is bloody strong I’d say. That’s what 35/36 kph?
Guys talking shit then right?
Cant compare FTP to 1minite power really. I may be a little out but from memory my last FTP was 255, my 1 minute power was north of 400, my 5seconds was 970ish. and I hit 1200 odd max at that time (i actually hit 1400watts on the track as well)
"Most of us are riding at 200 + watts on zwift for several hours just to cram hours in where we can. "
Must all be FOP . I’ve found a Garmin trace of a guy that went 5:49 in 2019, came 8th on bike, with 239 NP . Forgot how toxic IMJUK is, had a pop in IMJ whilst there, its just adverts now , 50k lurkers and sales pitches!
Yeah you’re right. So many adverts from the same names that seem to do it daily
Indeed, particularly in untrained individuals, where 1 minute powere is even more likely to be disjoint, and obviously anyone with an FTP of 122 (outside of extremes of the human range of age/disability) will be untrained.
Its interesting how we are so different. I have an FTP on 335 but can just about hit 1000w, certainly no more. However, i can do 260w NP for 5 hours and still run on reasonably fresh legs… i think i have the right genes for LD races, but would be hopeless in a Crit
Ive pretty much given up on IMJ. There are much better facebook triathlon groups, triathlon buddies and new2tri both much nicer environments
I’m similar, I’d say my ftp is in the region of around 320 watts
I doubt I scrape 900 attempting to sprint though!
He avg 80 odd watts for short Zwift session, 17mph and he thinks that translates to real world get to sheephouse and you’ll be rolling backwards at that. Walking pace on the flat!
That is very similar to how I was. FTP at peak was 320 and despite my size I could only just hit 1000w for 5 secs and no higher.
On training camp at lanza i would sit in the front of the group for hours powering through the wind at 230w. I just paid for it on the hills when i had so much more weight than everyone else. Even 15% BF I was 95kg
It’s like people ‘racing’ on Zwift. Numbers mean less when you have people leaning on shoulders and bars are banging. Racecraft trumps FTP
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.
