Just catching up on this thread…three observations to make…
Firstly, that for years i wouldn’t coach a 16 weeks to IM ‘athlete’ as i felt it was unethical…however, a chap that i considered to be a weak swimmer (even worse that mine @Hammerer ) i turned down his request for coaching and, iirc correctly, he swam 68 mins at IM Wales a couple of months later. I then coached him and a year later he swam the channel as part of A2A - what a great work ethic that lad had.
I therefore coached a female athlete from zero to IM copenhagen “as an experiment” and she just made the cut offs. it was a very challenging but rewarding experience for us both…
I did Hever without training as part of my research (2 years of no training, bar 2 x 2k o/w swims to ensure i wouldn’t be a liability to the organiser) and fek me it was hard…

I fit that bill - qualified for Boston relatively easily, run plenty of marathons - have done more than one IM, but I’m way way way… way way way, way off IMWC. Presumably a totally different level of athleticism surely?.. although … I dunno Maybe a few more bike hours… ha who am I kidding lol
Hmm. If a BQ is about 3:15 in my AG. Translate that as 3:35 run leg and I would’ve KQd at Texas this year. A chap I know who is a touch slower on swim than me maybe the same on bike KQd with a 3h38 run last weekend.
So for me they are both as hard to achieve/unlikely to happen.
