NAIL. ON. THE. HEAD
Something which Ive been meaning to do is make a table, top it with all my numbers and stuff from events and put a glass top to it tadah!! I can put my beer on it then!
Dunno about tatoos but Strava is the dog’s. It’s brilliant. At least, if you are a data kind of person & like to make connections between what people get up to in their spare time, and how they perform on race day.
There’s a guy in my club who ran 2h26 at London marathon last year. If i didn’t follow him on Strava, I would assume he was just a genetically gifted freak. But I do, so I know he’s a genetically gifted freak who runs twice per day, 120 miles per week, often getting in his first 10-15 mile session at 5am before work. The nut.
Fuck yeah. Ironman T-shirt’s get women initiating a conversation, that would be like a free pass straight to the moneyshot.
To never celebrate achievement, to be humble to the point of reverse snobbery, to comply with your peers at all costs, these are the characteristics of Britishness that I despise. It seems the rest of humanity has no problem with someone being successful.
Out of a hundred, if 99 people dislike your new tattoo and look down on you, but 1 thinks “hey, that’s cool, maybe I’ll give that a go”, I say it’s worth it.
Not really into tats and never got one for the reason someone above has said, it’s difficult to imagine somthing I would be happy with in years to come and I think most look a bit naff. Would definably never get an m dot but I have given some thought to a SBR tat though, I feel it’s occupied enough of my consciousness to warrent one.
Strava on the other hand is the dogs.
In which universe is this?
I don’t think UK society is like that nowadays, not now social media is so widespread. I think being modest is a more appropriate trait that anyone should aspire to.
As far as tattoos, I think you’re either someone who likes them, or you’re not. Like marmite, or liver. No, actually no-one likes liver right?
sooo dry!
Then it’s not been cooked right. Liver and onion is right up there as part of my 70s childhood.
Interesting choice of word “despise” … and interesting choice of word in “achievement” …
Both seem to be a little devalued in today’s society…
my M-dot - on my right deltoid - was after my 1st in 2005. I don’t regret having it done, and in fact I still like it as a design which is a little different - the M is a black outline with a red cross inside (basically the Swiss flag reversed out as white doesn’t work well on tats), and a red dot. And not too big as I didn’t want one that’s on show. Would I have it done now if I was starting on my IM journey from scratch? Probably not as they are as common as muck! Back in 2005, IM still had some meaning as a challenge.
As long as someone doesn’t get a Tough Mudder tat, they can do what they want!
Well it’s all relative. I once saw a guy with a Bristol 10K tattoo on his quad - I only knew what it was because he was wearing the T-Shirt too
It must be my boyish good looks then, but at least the T-shirt gives them an opening line.
And you are absolutely sure they aren’t taking the pi$$ ???
I would never get a tat of any kind, mdot or otherwise. I don’t dislike tats at all, they are just not me.
I do stuff for my own satisfaction. Its nice to get a congrats from your friends, family and team mates but I don’t feel the need to advertise all my achievements. I dont give a toss about the medals you get at events. Gave mine to the kids to play with. I still know i have done it. Dont need to frame my medal from the MK half marathon
I use strava, dont get a great deal out of it if I am honest.
Last time was on Tuesday, in the (mixed) changing rooms
I’m like iwaters, tattoos are just not my thing really, but then again other people probably aren’t interested in racing.
I am on Strava but don’t upload everything to it, and I have thought about removing the link from Garmin a few times, most KOM’s and CR’s these days are bagged, and generally not fairly anyway so I think the vast majority of people don’t look at them now.
I actually prefer Garmin Connect for the stats, but I don’t have Strava premium or whatever it’s called now to compare it again.
I don’t mind the social side of it TBH, looking at routes people locally have done, and if I’m away it’s also useful to find running routes. And to see what your mates have been doing, not in a competitive way as such, actually enjoy seeing people put in good performances.
Jeff
I don’t look at segment overall leaderboards at all. I have it set so it defaults to just my own personal leaderboard. I find that useful. Seeing quickly and easily how I trend over time on certain sections of OWS laps/courses, and bike/run stretches of road
Yeah same for me. I did my year or so of segment chasing when it first came out. Ended up meeting some of my, now, best friends through strava. Started off on some cheeky segment wars, chatted on strava, met up in person. Now a group of us have formed a trail running club! So it does have positives for sure!
But nowadays I don’t care about general segments etc. Occasionally I’ll chase one for motivation in a workout, normally one that a friend holds ‘for the bants’ as the youth would say.
But I do like seeing what mh friends are up to. Get training ideas. Keep in touch with people that are geographically remote.
