Right, bit last minute, bit I’ve now stocked up on maurten 100 gels (including some caffeine ones). As mentioned above, I’m aiming for a 3:30. How many gels should be using?

According to the science there are 25g of carbs in each gel and I should be able to take on ~90g per hour. So should I be taking a gel every 20 mins? That seems a bit excessive?

Yeah, yeah… I know I should have covered this in training

Don’t know about Maureen but I seem to average 4 SIS gels in a marathon and take in about 15 mins before so 5 in total.

I would be looking at one every 30 mins or so, from the 60 min mark i would think.

I’m going for 5 gels

That reminds me actually. I’ve a 3.5 hour race in less than 10 days and then the mara 4 weeks after that. Best start stocking up. Think i’ve spent half my wages in the first 2 days of this month already! haha

Do you need to take water with the Maurten gels, or are they isotonic like the SiS and High5 gels?

I’d be weary of taking anything that requires a lot of fluid intake for a long run or you risk some real stomach issues.

Hmm, it doesn’t say isotonic. It’s a ‘hydrogel’, it has a (very soft) jelly like quality. The instructions don’t say to take with water.

No, they’re not hydrating gels. But you don’t need a load of water to take them either. I’ve consumed them on their own, and then grabbed a few sips of water at the next aid station etc.

Saying that, i’m going to give the BetaFuel gels and drink a go at my race next week. See if i prefer them to Maurten.

Do people not take gels on their longer training runs? Anything much over 25km I’m taking 2 with me and using them, maybe not if I’m just plodding. Normally a hydro and normal type. Hydro in case my usual water stops (churches) aren’t working. A quick guy I’ve run with a couple of times (going for champ place at VLM, sub 2:40) never takes anything during training runs. He did moan he had fueling problems at a warm up 20 miler… He just said he doesn’t from a cost perspective. To me it doesn’t make sense. Surely to get the most from a training session you need to be fueling yourself properly let alone getting used to using them :man_shrugging:

Are the beta fuel gels hydrating?

I would use fuel longer, harder training runs. But not slow, easy ones where I’m building fat utilisation for example. However, I certainly wouldn’t be using Maurten etc, due to the cost. I’ll take haribo, cheap shot blocks, bananas. Whatever I can get my hands on really. Only product I specifically buy in and use consistently throughout the year in training is high 5 zero. Been using it for years and wouldn’t go without it.

Depends if I’m stopping for some cake :pig:

I guess it all depends on what each persons idea of a harder run is. 5min kms unlikely unless its really long. My medium pace long runs, which have been at 4:35 and faster is where I will be taking them. I’m 72kg at 5’ 11, I know I run out of fuel quite easily! I just use High5 aqua and regular. I might throw a couple of shot blocks down pre run if I’m feeling hungry.

Haha, that’s Laura Gray (trying to go pro next year) and coach Hammo, who looks very pissed :joy:
