The Fan Dance

Wales is now all in the “Green”, so hopefully we’ll see an easing of some of the rules soon. It’s been a long - almost - 3 months :unamused:

ETA:- FUUUUUCK, just looked next review isn’t for a fortnight :disappointed:

Dear Fan Dancers,

The countdown to the Summer 2021 has now begun. Given the projected lifting of government imposed covid restrictions and the relaxation of rules on outdoor gatherings as summer approaches, we are in a strong position to deliver the event.

Your Event Day
As you registered for a previous event which was cancelled due to the outbreak of Covid 19, we have rolled forward your booking as promised to the Summer Event.

We have assigned you a place as shown below:

Your allocated Event date is Saturday 3rd July 2021.

As you might imagine we have significant numbers of people who have been rolled forward like yourselves and unfortunately, we cannot offer you an alternative date should you be unable to attend on this date. We really hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you.

We will shortly be sending out guides covering Mountain Safety, Accommodation and Key Timings and Route Map.

IMPORTANT: We need you to take action as detailed below if you are able to come to this event on the day allocated.

Why we Need you to take Action
At each event we stage, we always get a significant volume of runners who drop out due to injury, lack of fitness, logistical/domestic/work related inability to attend etc. However, this time we expect there will be far more than usual, so we do not want to allocate a slot to someone who cannot attend and thereby rob someone else of the opportunity. This also causes thousands of pounds worth of wasted food, and unnecessary use of vehicles. Our organisations ethos is very much of harmony with the natural environment we are conscious of the footprint we leave behind and the wider impact of any unnecessary waste our event produces. Given the economic pressure placed upon us over the last year where we have been void of much of our revenue streams but left with many costs still to pay, we need to introduce economic measures to protect the future of the Fan Dance Race Series, and our organisation. Lastly, ‘no shows’ also have a knock-on effect for those who do attend, most notably we have to edit out all withdrawals on RV/Log sheets by hand before allowing the event to start for safety reasons and this causes delays and confusion at checkpoints.

We have learned from previous experience, there is little to be gained by simply asking people to let us know if they won’t be attending. Some, kindly tell us, but unfortunately the vast majority do not. Therefore, we need you to take a positive action if you are coming rather than us rely on action if you are not coming.

Action Required from You
We need you to confirm your attendance by sending a £20 fully refundable deposit to us by PayPal. I emphasis this is a deposit only and will be fully refunded to you in cash when you register at the event base camp on the day of your event. We are sorry to require you to take this action. We appreciate the inconvenience it will no doubt cause you. It is also an administrative nightmare for us, and may cause us significant Paypal fees, but we do feel this is the best workable solution for everyone.

We need you to send this deposit by Sunday 23rd May 2021 in order to secure your place for the Summer 2021 event. If we have not received your deposit by this date we will assume you will not be attending and your place will be cancelled.

As a gesture of good faith for anyone who cannot attend and does let us know by emailing us by the same date of 23rd May 2021, we will extend you a generous discount for the Winter 2022 Event. To qualify you must you’re your email to: fandancerace@avalancheenduranceevents.com and reach us by this deadline of 23rd May 2021. Subject line should read: WITHDRAWAL HIGH WALK

How to send your Deposit
You must pay by PayPal and not any other method. There are two methods available when paying by PayPal

Either
Log into your PayPal account and send a payment. Please use FRIENDS & FAMILY as the payment method if you can please.
Our PayPal address is: fandancerace@avalancheenduranceevents.com
If you are paying for someone else, please give their name and email address in the Message box.

Or
visit the website and go to Registration and Choose Summer Fan Dance then go down the page to Register. This link will take you directly there:

https://thefandancerace.com/registration/?ecatid=1

Complete the booking as you did originally but when you click on Race category look for the choice Definitely Attending which is at the bottom of the list and may be off the screen. When you have completed this page, you will be taken to PayPal where you can pay the £20. As we said above, this will be refunded to you in cash at the Event Registration.

Please use the same email address as you did with the original booking and if you are paying for someone else, please give their name and email address in the Message box on the booking form.

We are committed to honour any booking which was cancelled due to Covid but regretfully we will not be granting transfers to Winter 2022 for anyone who is unable to attend this summer’s event.

I thank you for your support and patience during these difficult times for us all and I look forward to seeing you in July.

too tired to read the whole thing…

if i understood the gist, people who have paid now need to send another 20 to secure their place? And by requesting the refund on race day, they know that you are present for safety reasons?

I don’t know much about PayPal, but dies friends and family avoid fees?

He’s had folk’s money for over a year, kept kicking it down the road instead of refunding last year and just re-issuing the race.
Now wants the competitors who have been patient to front insurance money to him to avoid sunk costs on no shows but you have to commit to that at least 6wks out.
No deferral, just a ‘generous’ (non specified) discount on the winter version if you can’t make it.

He can suck my big fat log.

If everyone has already paid, and they are no shows, does he not get to keep the dosh? Is he trying to save on safety cover?

That sounds like a great money laundering scheme - you pay me “clean” money via Paypal and I’ll give you £20 in used notes

Yeah if you are a no show, he’s keeping your money and if you are show, he’s keeping your money, and if you intend to show but can’t make between May 23rd and race day, he’s keeping your money plus £20!

Thats quite short for Ken. I have never seen an organiser complain so much about the people who enter his stuff. He only organises a handful of things a year and seems to struggle with all the “admin” it creates. Maybe if he spent less time positing COVID conspiracy stuff he would be able to sort his shit out

He comes across as a complete ‘Admin Vortex’. WRT comms; I cannot imagine him giving a coherent set of orders; he’d implode.

Do you think wiping the whiteboard and telling Ken to ‘draw it again’ would work?

Cmon lads… screw the nut and hand over your dosh.

I’m still to act on this; tbh it’s been going on for so long now.

I’m thinking of confirming my place and not sending the money. (I don’t have a PP account) just to watch his head explode.
I wrote the money off ages ago TBH.

DO IT!

Then ask loads of questions close to race day about stuff that’s in the race info pack.

Am I the only one still doing this now? Just booked a local campsite for £10 :+1: (Grawen). Literally so I can use the ablutions and save taking a shovel :joy:

I think so, I’m out. Ken can rest easy I won’t be bullying him.

Oh well, never got over to the Beacons before the event; I’ve been trying to compensate by carrying a heavier load (45lbs) and doing lots of hill repeats; but you just don’t get the long relentless ascending. Last one yesterday was 20.5km, 524m, 45lbs(22kg ish) done in 2:31. Last Thursday I did 12x up a local hill (471m in 8.2km). The local horse riders must think I’m mad.

Race day I only have to carry 25lbs + water in the Masters. I could carry the Main Field weight…but it’s a race init.
