I haven’t had the tests done for nearly 10 years, wonder if I’ll get the call later this year when I reach 55.
Not sure they’ll do any scans but as I got one for the research a few years ago I’m hopeful there’s nothing major lurking

A patient said something nice to me while I was tapping out some notes on the computer today.
“You’re a good typist. People our age can’t normally type that fast like the young ones can.”
Thanks.
She’s 72
Had a rough day
Got my first bowel kit through the post, an interesting start to the morning ..
Ironic that you received what I called the little poo key when I got mine
Not only is it a screening test but also an aptitude test that you can actually get a sample onto it and not make a mess
Also, I’ve just signed in to Libby App (web-based, haven’t downloaded an app) with my library card. A greater range of magazines to read than Pressreader. New Scientist and British Chess Magazine located, probably be a few more that I will also want to read.
Keep forgetting about PressReader and might see if I get the other one from work
But does it give you somewhere warm to spend the day in the winter so you can save money on your gas bill?
I thought I’d give you lot a heads up of what you can expect as you head into your 50’s, through the 60’s and into your 70’s.
The bad news - you can stay as fit and healthy as you try but gradually bits of you will wear out and need attention.
The good news - you can still look good and me and Mrs FB feel good when people don’t think we’re over 70 and put us in our 50s.
What goes wrong - in no particular order
Eyes - you will at some point need reading glasses (often happens before 50)
Hearing - will gradually get worse and you might need hearing aids. I held off getting my hearing tested until yesterday but found out hearing aids will be of benefit. Tested some and noticed a big difference so now have to think about getting some - but wow - ££££££££.
Teeth - will gradually need more attention as they become more brittle. I’ve had 2 adjacent ones break off recently and have 2 extractions new week.
Bowels - you will get a bowel screening test. Do them each year to stay safe. I had an adverse finding 4 years ago so am now on a 3 yearly colonoscopy cycle to check all is OK (was after the last one). I have a colonoscopy this morning.
Heart - yeh, they do wrong for all sorts of reasons even if you’re as fit as a butcher’s dog but you might be lucky and have no issues. Or you end up with something like AF like me and be on anticoagulants for the rest of your life. Or might end up needing a pacemaker - my possible next step.
Cancer - happens to 50% of people now. Just pray it’s curable. Me and Mrs FB have come through an episode each now and have been clear for some years.
Body - aches and pains and bits going wrong will happen and not get any easier! Stay fit and healthy and it’s manageable but you will still ache, find you can no longer put socks (or pants!) on standing up, etc.
Other than that - life is great and you can still have a ball or 3. Stay healthy, stay curious.
And on that point - the toilet is calling as my final prep pre-colonoscopy takes place……….
That’s cheered me up no end
Have fun today
Not sure whether to look forward to the future or end it all now
This bit sounds quite unusual too . I mean, one, yes. But three?
Hope it all goes well.
Hope you get good results FB
A nice wake up read this morning your post !
( no glasses) I have them but only need them late at night at the min.
Yes a pretty honest/ nice/ brutal assessment for sure.
The good, the bad and the ugly.
On a sporting front I hope to exercise till death
Or at least a few mins before my final breath
I’m sure I’ll be able to swim ( slowly) bike ( a touch faster) box ( on the pads in 25 min with my mate) lift weights, circuits etc etc in my 60”s at least
Running not so much.. I’m finding I’m getting more and more running related injuries
My last 7 issues are all running related I can do all the other stuff for hours and hours and I’m fine ?!?
My calf still hasn’t mended from Oulton duathlon and one day I’m guessing I won’t be able to run with a number on at all!
Anymore ..
Cancer is a lottery
As non smoking non vaping, light drinking virtual vegan I’ll be fuckin fumin if I get it … but life doesn’t work that way as we all know.
My first days work today for two years !
Stick at it you oldies
Back from the colonoscopy.
All good - no polyps as per last time although some diverticulitis which is common in older people (99% of the population have it and usually not a problem).
I don’t have to have another colonoscopy in the future and will be back ino a shit on the stick test routine again in 2 years time.
Pleased about that outcome
Went to a Greg Davies gig last night & the theme was getting old. On about prostate & upto 5 pisses in the night, getting tablets from the doc with a side effect of stopping any ejaculate.
He went on to talk about how he noticed a male contestent was constantly going to the toilet during the filming of a TV show & decided to follow him in to the toilet to confide with him. Turns out hes on the same tablets & noticed the same side effects, both forgetting they were still mic’d up. Then revieled that the bloke was Duncan from Blue…
Is this thread for the 50+ or the M50-54+ and W50-54+ ?
Talking of prostate I asked the doc doing the colonoscopy if he could do a BOGOF deal and check my prostate while he was doing the prep for the scope to go up.
“Sure - no problem” - a couple of seconds later - “all good, no problems”
If you don’t ask you don’t get!
Is this like one of those things where you compare how many you’ve had, like capitals you’ve been to?
Eyes
Teeth
Poo test
Aches and Pains
This could possibly go in the rant or existential thread
Went for a swim at the municipal pool in Vegas, guy asked me if I was a senior and over 50! Apparently they think you’re a bloody senior in Nevada at 50
I didn’t think I was looking that rough but he obviously thought to ask
But, I did save a dollar I’ll put it on red
Mind, 2 dollars for a swim and I had a lane to myself! Not sure if it was yards or metres though, lifeguard said yards but I’m sure it said metres elsewhere maybe that was for the long lane as we were going across.
