‘Feeding the rat’ comes from a book about rock climbing / mountaineering - intended as a better answer than “because it’s there”.
I should make clear that whether there’s pay-off for suffering is, I think, a very individual matter.

Wow, Scott Whittlestone did 8:52 at IM Italy today, and off a 65 minute swim. I know he’s a bit of a beast but that is impressive!
Eye test today, general eye health was good which was pleasing.
But my prescription has changed quite a bit, think the current lenses are 3 years old. It’s changed quite a bit in recent years and getting expensive for new lenses. Choice is whether to stick with varifocals again, not been a big fan of the current ones.
Expensive business this getting old I’m not bothering changing the Oakley’s, that would get very expensive although they’re getting a bit tatty now.
Everyone else find their vision is changing a lot.
Yes mine is Jeff. Long range is still bang on but short range is getting worse. I have had to increase the font size on my phone so I can read messages without glasses.
Despite having a larger GPS watch it’s harder to read than my smaller one was a couple of years previous. It’s annoying because I only need them for specific things but the list of things is slowly growing.
Absolutely pointless having texts/messages sent to my 735XT when I’m wearing my contacts
Mum and dad both had glasses at 50.
54 in a bit, I won’t be long.
I was thinking about training and getting older. Saw a thing from Ben Parkes that basically suggested using a 14 day training period, rather than 7, as that allows for alternate days running and maybe rest of cross train on the off days.
I know I get beaten up a lot more when I try to do the weekly 40km every weekend. I think 14 days makes more sense but not sure if I’m reading from the book of excuses?
I really wanted to run again yesterday but I’ll be sticking to day on day off ( for running)till… I can’t run anymore at all.
Personally less injuries and improved performance, when I’m at the right weight.
I have been thinking exactly this.
I normally run 3 times a week Wed Fri and Sun but would like to run 4 and like you say it is tough.
So had been contemplating running every other day so averaging 3 and a half runs a week over the 2 week cycle.
I thinks there is some logic to it. Overall volume might take a hit but I’m hoping that will be balanced by the body feeling better and it would give more time to properly address S&C/cross training without that feeling of ‘cramming it all in’.
I have seen references to a 10-day training cycle being ideal for quality + recovery, but it doesn’t work if you have fixed weekly points like club runs or weekend long sessions.
I have played around with a few options over time. 2 cycles over 21 days can work. Also when doing a focused run block, the plan specifically suggested 2x10mile run days instead of 1x20ml, so sometimes 2 consecutive days can be useful.
Chester Tri member, there’s a few in his training group who are pretty awesome in their age groups
I was planning to alternate weekends of longer bike, medium run and vice versa to try and stop overdoing things but the niggles from UTMB have meant little running or fairly short runs. Hoping to try something a bit longer tomorrow and see how it goes.
It was also part of my comments around the working 4 days or 9/10 days that poet mentioned, the bank holiday this week was good as I got my long bike in early and was a back-to-back long ride.
Although pacing is key to most of these, overdo that and I’m recovering for days.
Running wise these days 4 hours is a fairly big week and can only go longer now and again, especially if I’m swimming and cycling.
That makes a lot of sense and definitely resonates Jeff.
October
I’m going to do a 14 day programme and just repeat it.
Key sessions each week, room for moving about at about 12 hours per week.
In the new year I’ll see how I’m doing and adjust.
Just looked at the results for last weeks sprint tri, the bike and run were actually faster than I expected to go. Transitions needed a calendar to measure and the swim… well it was messy at best.
This guy!
My old man ran the Bristol Great Run 10k, this morning, running for England Athletics against the Welsh. He’s in the 75+ age category and at 79, is at the top end of the age range. Recently had covid and a few injuries. Was hoping for anything under 60mins and ran 55! He’s the first to admit, there’s not many of them in his age category but he came home in 3rd place. Don’t mind admitting things got a bit dusty.
Absolutely brilliant
Wow @wheezy, your dad is proper amazing . Congratulations to you David brilliant effort
Bloody hell!!!
That is proper impressive.
