The over 50's

My max HR hasn’t reduced much over the last few years either, still ~189. I try to avoid too much top end stuff though, it fatigues me too much and recovery takes forever.

Garmin says my average resting heart rate, awake, is 44-48bpm recently.

I usually take watch off at night. The few times I have worn it overnight there were frequently readings in the 30s and I think I once saw a 29 which freaked me out a little, so I stopped wearing it :grinning:

Until recently I would have said maxHR 175, based on max HR achieved in 800m run intervals, but some hellish Zwift race back in January squeezed out a 179 :coffin:

edit: ah sorry just realised this is the 50+ thread & shouldn’t be here as a whippersnapper in “mid 40s”. Can I lift anything upstairs for you old timers while I’m here? :wink:

Just taken mine now and its 49. I’m now 60 and would have said a few years ago it would have been closer to 44. The thing that has really changed for me is my Max HR. Anything over 150 is really pushing and I can’t recall now going over 155. Jan on the other hand who is a similar age has a slightly lower resting HR but with effort can easily get her HR into the 170s :man_shrugging: :person_shrugging:

My Fenix 6 seems to record a lower resting HR than the 735 that it replaced. The Fenix has been recording a resting HR in the mid to low 40s since October. The 735 was typically high 40s/low 50s :man_shrugging:

Raised resting HR is usually a good sign that I’m ill or about to go down with something.

I don’t tend to do much top end anaerobic stuff these days, so I don’t know how my max HR has reduced with age. When I rowed I spent a lot more time exploring the upper limits of my HR. My last race at Henley in 2005 hit 205bpm through the Stewards Enclosure to the finish. In that same season, my HR was over 195bpm for the last 10 minutes of the Head of the River Race.

How old were you then ?

I’ve only seen 200 plus on a 18ish min 5 k effort on a concept 2, but that was a long time ago!

Don’t think I’ve ever seen over 185! But only got my first HR strap in my late 30’s.

Yeah, I was 35 when I stopped rowing.

I used an HRM from the age of about 20, but it was only in the last few years of rowing that I had an HRM that recorded HR for review after the activity. Usually in a race you’re a bit too busy concentrating on other stuff to want to check your HR, but I think 200+ was quite a common occurrence.

The 30 year olds at the gym are all doing 1 k ski erg races, even the huge juice heads, who fade to a standstill at about 800ms after starts that look to put the machine in danger.

Lots of 190/200 bpm readings for those that wear monitors ( most don’t ).

Stiff SI joint at the min so I’ll be giving my run a miss, some “ unusual “ techniques on display !

I used to find that I could go deeper racing in an 8 or 4 than I ever would in a single or on an indoor rower.

There’s always the option to back off when you’re by yourself, but in a crew boat with your mates relying on you it’s easy to push yourself to the point where you’re almost blacking out.

I think that’s the issue for us old gits. I remember topping out at 187 in a HM soon after I got an original Garmin 301 (2007ish … so I was 42) but those records are long gone.
By then I was only rarely using a strap for running as I would mostly rely on RPE.
I never got my HR as high on a bike (by which I mean the turbo), from recollection it was always 5-10 beats lower, even on a puke fest

I only started recording resting HR in 2016, at which point max HR is not something I’m paying any attention to. I occasionally see c160bpm after a long climb on a very hot day

you should have AF - you’ll never know what your RHR is ever again as it jumps all over the effing place!

When I used to do lab testing at a university they always cycling max HR would be around 5 beats less as the bike supports a lot of your weight.

I just pulled up the data from those races that someone here said would be a good idea… HR actually hit 180 in race 1, and averaged 173 for race 2 :face_vomiting:
