Result from the Belfast Marathon this morning:

"Other noteworthy local performances included 64-year-old Tommy Hughes clocking 2:36.37 to finish 25th overall.

The county Londonderry man, who represented Ireland at the 1992 Olympics, has broken numerous world age-group records in recent years which included running a time of 2:27.52 in Frankfurt five years ago."

Impressive stuff, it’s alright staying good at 5/10k as they age but a marathon is a lot tougher. Guess he wasn’t at the Olympics for nothing.

impressive that he didn’t run himself into a broken husk as an olympic marathoner, physically and/or mentally. Maybe a bit unusual to burn both bright and long in running / elite sport generally?

Yeah, you’d think an Olympic marathon athlete would be doing 100 mile weeks regularly which would probably break most people.

And to be still going 32 years later is bloody impressive.

Must be on a diet of ibuprofen!

Agree but knee cartilage and will to thrash yourself apparently can!

Love it when ex pros carry on competing at a high level after retirement. Kind of shows they must have had their perfect job, because they carry on doing it for fun after they retired :man_shrugging:t2:

Daf Belt (unrelated but cool surname ) finished Venice 70.3 today, she’s just turned 85!

Husband who’s a few years younger also finished.

God only knows what noises I’ll be making when I get out of bed on a morning if I make it to 85, let alone doing a 70.3!

Daphne’s a fucking legend. Still competing and winning her age group - although to be fair she deosn’t have much competition - and still swim coaches down in Littlehampton/Worthing area. Always supports local events down there.
