The Sub 5 70.3 Thread

It’s a bit worrying that I forgot I had a marathon… I vaguely remembered that Zurich was carried over from 2021, but I thought that it was towards end of April. Most normal people would have the date firmly nailed on the calendar

There is a positive side, it means I can do Wings For Life Run on 8 May and put in a decent effort. Would like to get to 50km

Still beat me, though :sob::sob::sob:

Talking of schedule insanity, due to deferrals, and general over-estimation of my ability/stupidity last year I ended up with:
11 July - National 100 TT
18 July - 70.3 Staffs (ended up the hottest day of the year)
25 July - Outlaw Full
2 Aug - National 12hr TT

I DNS’d the 12 hour, literally could not face doing it.

One of the reasons I now have a coach, as hoping he’ll spot such stupidity earlier

Marshman looks like a good course for a fast time.

Bike is slightly short and only +112m although very windy.
Run very slightly long and +55m
22nd May, only £110.

Think @funkster won that or something?

Just took those times from @joex early in this thread. Adjusted them so they all total 4:55, which is more or less the slowest of them (leaves 5 mins for transition). The means from that data are 0:34; 2:42; 1:41.
Swim times have the biggest variation, I think, so I’ve put them in swim order.
May have cocked up.

Thanks and seems reasonable, people can add/subtract according to their strengths/weaknesses.

Yeah, or just pick a row that seems a good match and tweak from there.

Week to go before my 70.3 and not really sure what to expect! Sub 5 is still possible assuming no freak weather or mechanical type problems. Although the long range forecast is suggesting 25c during the day, which will be tougher after an English winter, ordinarily it wouldn’t bother me that much.

No idea about the swim, hoping I can scrape 37-38 but I haven’t used a wetsuit for months or swam in O\W. Pool swimming isn’t going great so it will be survival, if only there was something I could do to improve my swimming :man_shrugging:

Biking in the garage isn’t going too badly, but again a lack of longer bike rides, outside and on the tri-bars will be a shock. I’ve hired a P-Series but not sure if the wheels\tyres will be great, probably just the stock stuff. But the course is very flat but can be notoriously windy.

Running is a bit like the bike, not terrible but not great either, again the course is pan flat but there’s about 9 dead turns, and a few other twists to break the rhythm. And I’ve done about 1 brick run :joy:

Need to get rid of the lingering fatigue from last weeks fell race first, I’ll be having an easy week which should help.

If I have a reasonable day a 4:55 is possible, not sure I’ll get much faster unless the bike course is quicker than I’m expecting.

Hope it goes well, remind me which race?

25 deg, will be lovely……until the run!

Thanks, it’s Texas 70.3

In theory I’ve had about 2.5 years to train for it since I entered so should be in better shape :joy:

Starts about 7am so might finish just before the peak heat.

Good luck @jeffb! Sure the TTTs will pay dividends on race day .

When do you fly out?

Everything’s massive in Texas. You sure it’s not a 104.6 that they’re calling a 70.3….:rofl::rofl:

Is it Woodlands like the IM, or down on the coast (Galveston or something?)

Thanks, hoping a 70.3 pace will be a doddle compared the TTT’s :joy:

First flight is on Wednesday teatime, but don’t get to Houston until Mid-day Thursday after KLM stiffed me with the flights and I’ve got an overnight stay in Amsterdam.

Haha, yes it’s deffo the 70.3. It’s on Galveston so probably a strong breeze off the Gulf of Mexico.

Bike is straight down the main road to the end of the island and back, so pretty much a 50 on a DC!

That’ll be savage if you haven’t been on the aerobars much.

I was feeling it in my shoulders after 8km on Saturday!

I’ve been aero bars only on the turbo since Feb and I still struggle a bit. Did 30k outside on them on Sat and my neck is still a bit sore.

Are you out there now @jeffb? How was travel?

Second guessing myself now on what I need to have sorted for US entry. Just ESTA, covid passport, and a private LFT result within 24hrs of departure, right?

Still need to sort my travel from NYC to Boston. Train prices have jumped :person_facepalming: Flying is now way cheaper

Waiting for the reply with interest! I found dochq.co.uk doing an observed LFT for just under £20 and got pretty good reviews. Since I need 5 of them I was going to go with that.

I notice we are in the same wave\corral, so will keep an eye out for you  .
