I’d put this year down as one of my worst. Have been super inconsistent and no real focus. Have had flashes of what I’d call training, but few and far between.
But from the outside I’ve done a half ironman and a 170km ultra this year. Small, local races I grant you. But I did quite well in both. Yet I feel a bit athletically unfulfilled for some reason.
Most ‘normo’s’ wouldn’t understand that at all. I’m not sure I even know how I feel as I come to the end of the year in a bit of an unmotivated slump.
This resonantes, although I’ve not had the year you have success wise, in fact it’s been one of my worst.
Work, family and a lack of strength (not fitness) has been the downfall and it’s not going to get easier, especially after the last few days. LO is on a residential for a couple of days. I came in from the office, thought about running but just ate dinner and put a film on, like a normal person.
I need to turn it around. It gets harder as you get older physically but I find my mental resilience has definitely taken a big hit on the last year.
How reliable are these body comp machines in the gym?
Or are they calibrated to shock you to going to the gym more!
My lean/ skeletal muscle mass is fine, but I couldn’t believe my weight and body fat percentage… I haven’t exercised now in a month because of injury, my diet has been awful of late and I’ve been quaffing a lot of beer - so I hope it’s just a case of clean living again. I was on the elliptical for an hour
9 miles. Feels about like cycling only really really boring. I’ll get my bike back out I think. I think the novelty of an elliptical will wear off quickly
Yes - I couldn’t believe the figures - and tbh although I’ve not been running I’ve not been sedentary. I’ve been tearing around 3 weeks installing/ de installing and moving studio. And I don’t feel like I’m carrying much extra. I do reckon I’ve lots some muscle mass over the years - but nonetheless it’s good to just maybe take stock and re calibrate lifestyle a bit.
Such odd places . Fat men and blokes in t shirts looking at their phones. Rudimentary equipment - quads, hamstrings, calf’s & basic core and some elliptical to get a sweat up. And weighted lunges…not a place I particularly want to hang out in much.
I always take my phone, but only because it has an app to record sets & reps. I never look at the socials whilst I’m there.
It’s a tricky one with weight training as if people are having 3min rest between sets (for example) then looking at their phone for 3 mins doesn’t make any difference but it’s often longer than that and the perception of p1ssing around on their phone whilst you’re waiting for the machine.
Ps. There’s a regular at my gym who always hogs one of the power racks all night. He’s not on his phone or anything but does really short sets (2/3 reps) and massive rests (15mins plus). We’ve nicknamed him Fritz as he hangs his hoodie on the rack as soon as he gets there (like Germans putting their towels on the sunbed stereotype), if it’s free, then p1sses around for ages before, during and after his workout. We were there for an hour and I reckon he did 10 reps (not sets) the whole time.
