Training - What Training?!

Love the rowing machine.

Done a load of half marathons and marathons on it. Have my own C2, although it’s a relic now!

Out of interest ( and anyone else who uses this fantastic machine )

Could you run 5k, 10k half marathon etc faster than you can row?

My times are very similar at present, ( assuming a similar effort )

A marathon row !
Dear me!!

No, I dont think so but I’d have to check.

Definitely not the 5km, which was one of the rowing clubs ‘A boat’ selection (you also had to be able to move a boat, be decent technically) criteria.

That’s interesting, do you mean that one of the rowing clubs selection criteria for the A boat was that they had to be able to run 5km faster than they could row 5km?

Hang on I’m probably being thick here, maybe you personally can row 5km faster than run, and also the rowing club uses a timed 5km row as one of their selection criteria?

Yep.

Although think that reflects more on my below average rowing performance than running prowess.

I sort of tested this yesterday …?!

Session was
1 km run t mill @ 13.3 kph ( 4:30 per km pace )
1 km ski erg ( 4:30 per km)
1 km run ( same pace)
1 km row (4;30 per km) …… x 6.
12 runs
6 skis
6 rows
No stopping !
The ski is the hardest ( ( for me) I’m guessing this would be the case for most of us on here maybe not F budda and super erg monsters like John sowler )
The row is the easiest
The run is nearer the ski than the row for me according to hr and perceived effort.

Total time 1:55
Av Hr 154.
Enjoyed it!

I see my post was very unclear.
We did run reps up a sand bank as part of training but running wasnt part of selection as such.

I meant a 5km erg time trail on the C2, hence I have done many maximum effort 5kms, nearly all of them faster than my run PB

Ah interesting.

I tried to row 5km once but lost the will to live after about 3km. Hands and bum objected.

Occasionlly I try 2km hard as part of a circuit, I’m normally around 8 minutes. Can run 2km a little faster than that though.

Row 2km PB is 6:42.x which is 1:40.5 /500m, I could never break the 6:40 barrier. I think is was a mental thing holding 1:38 and 1:39s

:man_running: run 5km - 19:38.x (2003?)
Row 5km - 18:19.x (2004)

:man_running: run 10km - 41:38.x (March this year)
Row 10km - 37:55.5 (17th Aug 2004)

Think my 10km run in 2004 was about 42:50 - 43 minutes, I very rarely ran longer than 6km (30 minutes) back then.

Not sure if this was my erg Marathon PB but found this on the online rankings

April 18th, 2004 - Age 31
42195m – 3:05:27.8

I have never ran a sub 3:30 Marathon, although I was in 3:22 - 3:24 shape in April 2023 but got Covid 2 weeks out and had to DNS.

Hoping to go about 3:22 - 3:24, that 2023 form range next April. I couldn’t face a Marathon this year after 2023, all that training, all but the two week taper, and then no race. That left emotional scars.

Freakily your row PBs are within seconds of my run PBs. FWIW

You row: 5km 18m19, 10km 37m55s, marathon 3h 05m 27s
Me run: 5km 18m06, 10km 37m 45s, marathon 3h 05m ??s

No idea how you row that fast or far though

An hour of hill repeats on the treadmill

Followed that up with 35 mins of circuits with Mrs T - well outside my comfort zone (a good thing) and nearly hurled at the end (third rep of “Suicide Sprints”)

Gentle 2.5 hr run this morning with Mrs T around Rivington/Winter Hill

No rain - T shirts and shorts for the first day of winter but very wet under foot

7 hours of bike commuting, just over an hour of triathloning, two half hearted runs, a few quick splashes and two games of squash :ambulance:

Another ~7.5 hours again this week, pretty much even split between running and cycling. Did a short interval session on Thursday but it was padded out by a ride outside yesterday and a 17k trail run today.

Also had a couple of token efforts in the gym as well.

Got a 25K trail race next Sunday so probably taking it easy towards the end of the week, will be cycling on an evening.

Managed to get out 3 times this week, which is a big improvement.

First 2 x were super unspectacular, just 45 mins locally. But they’re helping to get my fitness trending ever so slightly upwards.

Had aore fun run today. Only covered just over 11kms in 1.30 but that was with almost 700m of vert on very, very wet, slippy, muddy terrain. I was almost as slow downhill as up! Super slow going, but was great fun.

Walking into the reception areas of the pool, absolutely covered in mud, whikst most of the other parents were busy staring at their phones while the kids swim. They looked at me like I was the weird one! :joy: :joy:

Scraped five hours with one swim, a mini jog, commuting and a couple of turbo sessions.

I’ve told myself that the 1st of December is the end of the off season and work starts now. So 1.5 hrs on the trainer today with an over/under session. Then a mini jog off the bike with my boys.

Seen a lot of ‘advent’ runs today on the Strava feed. Those four consecutive half maras will bit im sure😂

Same, started with a 17km progression run, enjoyed it but there was a bit of dread before I started.

7hr 45 for the week, 45 minutes less than last week but that is okay, was a bit ill Mon/Tue. I am feeling stronger at the end of the week than the start.
