Execution is what would happen if I came home with a Speedmax
It is why I kind of laugh at the my FTP is 320 watts… yeah but they can only hold 240 for 50 minutes and go 20 mph. Speed in an event is what matters.
As I have said before, my cda… road bike is terrible, it is what it is, 190 watts gets me 20.x mph on a good day…
If it didn’t kill you first…
I did a head to head a while back, P2 v Canyon Endurance roadie, at 240W was 4kmh faster on the P2.
That’s significant. Way more than you’d expect.
I’m kind of stuck. Tri bike needs new wheels (rim/campag) and a bunch of other stuff done to it, new tri bikes are way out of bike voucher territory.
Changing subject, I’m not saying all Americans are full of shit but they had a reputation in golfing circles for it - all their courses were pancake flat with no trees, so their handicaps made them all look semi-pro but when they turned up in Britain they couldn’t make par for toffee. Amateur but also Pro.
It seems the same with triathlon - I’ve done a bunch of American courses, virtually. Eagleman 70.3 is like a joke, a literal joke, if you’ve done any European half, or God forbid - Exmoor. Some of their bike courses are net downhill FFS. No wonder they struggle to get USA on podiums.
Sorry, bit of a tangent there.
First run outside since early October - 40 mins, day after lap binges inside
Still all good, fingers crossed. Erring on side of caution - aerobic fitness fine… more a jog than a run… hopefully that little saga’s done, I’ll continue gym sessions
I had a very rare bit of totally free time as the kids and wife were doing Xmas pottery or something.
Decided I’d give the gym a go!
Was a bit like a rabbit in the headlights as didn’t really know what I wanted to do!
Lifted my first ever free weight in over 40 years of life today!
Actually quite enjoyed it once I’d made up a little circuit. But I have a feeling I’m going to be feeling things tomorrow that I didn’t even know existed!
Even tried out the barbell thingy. Quite hard as I had no idea what weight stuff I should use as I have no baseline. So just picked that one up as it was. Did 5 x reps of chest to straight arm (whatever that’s called) overhead. 30 secs rest and repeat. Did that 3 times amongst the circuits.
@Mungo2 would be turning in his grave to see such a gym noob making a buffoon of himself! It’s only a tiny one at the caravan park as part of our winter membership.
Never too old to try new things eh!
I hope you aren’t planning on using your arms tomorrow
Fucking Dom’s back - I hate Dom. Give him a few days. Might loose him on the bike on Sunday. Walking down the stairs like a paraplegic
Ha ha - there’ll be some footage on You Tube tomorrow about some bloke doing reps in a gym.
…” what form it that?!” they’ll shout - “should’ve moved his arms towards his chest with his back more vertical” … “Wtf why wasn’t his legs 95 degrees lateral to the machine” … “what not warm up?!”
Only if the reception staff were viewing the monitor as luckily I was solo!
Despite my depleted bike power, my sad average min per 100m swim and pitiful 20 min ish … recent 5 k run efforts……
I’m not actually dead yet ?!?
Well done on the gym effort, some real hard work goes on in those places, and a huge amount of posing too.
Stick at it GB.
I’m in the DOMS camp too, squash twice in 2 days
Mrs got a set of rackets for her birthday and keeps wanting to play. All that springing about- calves and hamstrings are not loving it (and I’m terrible at it too)
The short version:
October 24 - Swim – 4.4km / Bike – 401km / Run - 30km / Time – 21h 11m
November 24 - Swim – 7.5km / Bike – 617km / Run - 60km / Time – 33h 7m
"The_Very_Long_Version”
Overall – Part 1
A belated update from October, when I decided to have a ‘non-season off-season’.
This followed my glass half empty view of September & the glass half full replies I got on here.
So, I did no training for 8 days between 4th & 11th October just to rest & clear some head space.
Swim
Managed 4 swims in November, my highest total since March (when my club’s pool closed).
Unfortunately, getting wet once a week does not a swimmer make.
My days of club swimming 3 times a week at 5.30am on TT1.0 seem like a long time ago.
But I haven’t given up hope of slowly clawing my swim fitness back to a decent level (for me) again.
Bike
Despite the time off in October I still managed over 400km & November’s 617km is my 8th biggest monthly total since at least 2009 and 2024 is already highest annual total ever!
I must update the ‘What you watchin’?’ thread, as films on the exercise bike have kept me going. Although I have really been feeling the cold in the Summer House this year and initially out it down to being a Soft Southern who is getting older too. Then the ‘Weigh In’ thread reminded me that, despite some recent gains, I’ve lost around 40 lb / 18 kg of blubber / insulation!
So, I’ve bought from extra layers to keep me warn over the winter months.
Run
Despite still struggling to get out of bed some mornings, I have tried hard to do ‘something’.
Which means I am actually quite pleased with 7 runs in Oct. & Nov. that were under 20 mins.
(As previously, I would have abandoned the idea of running all together & done nothing at all. )
This ‘little and often’ approach means 2024 is on track to be my 3rd biggest annual total ever!
I still use the long sleeve running top from my first (and only) standalone 10km race in 2004.
I had thought about entering my 2nd 10km to mark the 20 year anniversary to see how I’d do.
Unfortunately, I haven’t done a single run over 8.25km this year, so I ran up Harrow Hill instead.
This turned out to be one of those Winter runs you feel good about, regardless of the time taken.
As it was cold & dark when I started at 6.30am & I saw dawn starting to break while I was out.
This was my car over an hour after I started!
And the sun still hadn’t cleared the skylight by the time I got back home either.
Overall – Part 2
Unfortunately, I lost all my digital (/detail) training records from 2004 to 2014.
But I knew 2014 annual totals were: Swim – 9km / Bike – 5,225km / Run - 402km.
So, recently, I’ve only been comparing 2024 to my numbers from 2015 to 2023.
Recently, I found the book I recorded my 2014 training in, before transferring the details to Excel.
This confirmed one of my biggest cycling years (2014) didn’t have a single ride over 2hrs/50km.
Which sums up a phrase I used a lot in my old TT1.0 Blog, “The healing power of statistics”.
As my old race training used to peak with 4 hour/100km bike rides and 2 hour / 21 km runs.
But these days I don’t race and my training should remain geared to fitness & weight loss.
And the 2014 detail confirms I’ve trained more in 2023/24 than any time since 2008/9!
Cheers, Paul.
Only got 5.3km of my 18km long run done. Trees down everywhere, climbed over a few but got fed up with nearly tripping over all the smaller branches and debris.
Counted 11 threes down within just over a mile of the house.
7hrs 45 this week
Missed a 50 min run but otherwise a full house of sessions for third week running - great to feel the effects of some consistency
7 hrs for me.
Bad week, there is always next week.
Need to get over these storms and stuff, and just get it done.
5.5km uphill tempo run on the treadmill.
Awful, after a weekend of curry and beer.
10.5 hour recovery week
Being honest it was the usual stuff but no long static bike that everyone thinks is a row !
4 swims ( !)
2 run interval sessions
4 x strength sessions
Stretching blah blah blah !
Nice !!
Woke up with a dodgy calf (muscle!) so did an incline TM walk rather than a tempo TM.
