Training - What Training?!

2020…

I did a monster on a spin bike last year… charity thing…

Just under 7 I think?

I’m looking for this years crown … I’ll take on all cumers…!

Boom!

In a sad way, I’m quite enjoying it. It has a finite life now, seeing how we can ride and find a cafe but like I said, I don’t really enjoy riding on my own any more and having no job, it seemed important to be close to home.

Plus my membership is a gift. Most of all, it’s just seeing the challenge through.

Looking at some old posts on the Aussie forum, it seems like April 26th was when I decided to go ‘badge hunting’. I only had three at that point, as I didn’t know they were a ‘thing’ and I’d been off Zwift for so long.

May 14th was when I clicked the Everest/ Tron bike challenge and somewhere in my tiny brain, wrapping it all up by end of June and getting back to running seemed like a good idea.

I don’t watch any tv, just the game and music on Spotify. The biggest thing to overcome IMO is the constantly wet shorts. They don’t dry out and my pro tip is to change them if you are going to be longer than 3.30-4hs.

That actually looks really nice. Wondering if I could just about squeeze a laptop inside - if we go back to the office this year I’d be quite keen on a few long commute days (~45 miles each way) but not with a rucksack and not keen on panniers

I used to work in Lingdale just a few miles inland. We used to take the horses on the beach there for a gallop a few times a year.

I own that. Used it once on an overnight Devon to Kent ride. Was hoping to use it a lot this year, but … lockdown. It is a great bit of kit. Heavier than the cheap ones due to the fact it comes with a hard harness type part, but the quality is evident.

Out of interest, how do you judge this? It seems HR is your only indoor metric other than RPE?

Fair play on such a long ride indoors. Ive done 5hrs in zwift, but that’s with a group and text chatting with people which helps the time pass a bit quicker!

I didn’t change gear for the last two hours…

Cadence and heart rate… I normally have to go up the block after four hours but the fourth hour stayed similar were I would normally fade or have to work harder…!

A race is a silly long ride if it happens…!?

200 miles would be an achievable challenge, and needn’t be too painful

Don’t go with a flat route, other than being really dull, sitting in the same position for mile after mile will feel awful

Set a realistic power target and stick to it. The one 200 mile I have done was at 180w, it will feel really low at first, but stick with it. Spin up hills (I set limit at 220w up hill) and enjoy the view

I would travel as light as possible, buy chips, mars bars, coke etc on the way. Do it on a day with no rain forecast, if setting off early, bring arm warmers and Gillet

From Kent, I would probably head down to the coast at Camber, and follow coast road to Brighton, then do Brighton to London (Reverse BHF LtB route) Through Central London, taking in Iconic Landmarks to Sevenoaks, then back to Kent. I recon about 12 hours riding, probably 14 hours elapsed. So set off at 6am back home by 8pm.

I did a 186 miler couple of years ago. Mine was almost pancake flat.
I rode out to the coast with clubmates - then came home solo. Had the advantage of some protection going out and tailwind coming home.
We had a fairly early mid ride breakfast and that seemed to really work for me. Only needed a small lunch plus snacks whilst riding.
Biggest issue for me, I rode on a Sunday and I’d mapped out places to stop, but as it was a red hot day… and as I got closer to home later on - no where was open and I was getting very low on fluids.
So good knowledge of shops/garages that are open when you expect to ride past!

Yep, been caught out by that before. Did a 3km relay race with my club a few years ago and decided that me and a friend would run back home instead. It was a really muggy, humid summer’s night, with the first section on the coast path through dense woodland. So really stuffy. We knew we’d hit Teignmouth about half way, so planned on stocking up on water, snacks etc.

As we dropped in to the town, heading for the garage we had planned, we looked at the watches and it was just gone 11pm. Yep, the garage closed at 11! We thought it was 24 hr!! We ended up running through the town looking for anything that was open. Ebven the pubs had all shut! But, we caught a light on in a proper ‘local’s local’ pub, and the door was open.

We popped our heads in and gave the barmaid the fright of her life. I think she was just about to reach for the sawn off, seeing two sweaty, skinny runners dripping with sweat and breathing heavily, when we managed to plead our plight as quickly as possible. She then proceeded to wet herself laughing and topped up our water for us. Unfortunately the till had been closed down so we couldn’t buy any snacks, but she took pity and chucked us a few bags of nuts. She thought we were absolutely crackers, so wanted a photo with us to put up on their facebook page!

It got pretty tough at the end though. Miles of flat tarmac on the cycle path up and down the estuary with more and more cramp as we got more and more dehydrated.

I do love a good off the cuff adventure like that though!

I agree with everything apart from riding through central London. After riding nice quiet lanes through Kent, Sussex and Surrey it would be grim!

Rear carrier is great !
Screwed on so can’t come off, made like it was designed for fabric saddles.

My old mate the super fast J dog of Jacksonville said it would be quite aero too!

He said it would be better off higher up …!

Wow, all the badges, that’s insane, well done :+1:

Let me clarify. All the Route Achievement badges. I still have 25 x Alpe, 25 x Volcano and 100kph to go but they are in a different section.

Still good, that’s what I thought you meant BTW.

And the running badges
