That is very similar. I held back in the first hour and was then able to hold a slightly higher wattage in the subsequent miles than I normally would.
The PM is definitely helping to control and spread the effort out.
Is there something about your wetsuitâs buoyancy that is messing up your stroke?
Is the water warm enough to swim without a wetsuit for a comparison time?
(In line with @Sparkyâs point about accuracy of distance.)
Iâm off to the pool in a minute if you really want to see what slow looks like. ![]()
Good luck, Paul. ![]()
I was thinking about that yesterday.
Weirdly I was always faster when I stuck on a wetsuit, but it seems to have swung the other way in the last few years
Bloody hell Iâm a sorry state today. Perhaps 3hrs of mtb at a bike park for my first ride in about 6wks, wasnât the brightest idea.
10k hilly run first thing, 4:40 average pace.
Gentle Z2 1hr spin on Zwift.

What was your swimming like when the wetsuit made you faster?
When I got my Snugg donkeysâ years ago, my swimming & floating âabilityâ meant no extra buoyancy.
Which meant my pool swimming and wetsuit swimming times were very similar.
Other TTers who dragged their legs when swimming, had wetsuits acting like built in pull buoys.
Obviously, they loved the fact their wetsuits genuinely gave them free speed in OW.
Clearly wetsuit design will have come on a long way since then, so I might be talking ![]()

I have the worlds heaviest legs
They just sink.
I can âpress the Tâ all day long but they sink.
Iâll dig out some files and have a look
Last run over 30 minutes before the marathon
8 miles / 55:10 / 6:53 pace / 132HR
Our club organises an informal relay race on the Cleveland Way (~110 miles) every year between local running clubs, and a few really go for it.
I did a leg today, just over 12k mostly on track but a few long draggy climbs and the final descent is on a cobbled path which isnât very fast.
Managed 56:20âish for my leg today which was nearly 90 seconds faster than 5 years ago when I had a good year. Was pleased with that but smashed it a bit as I knew a young lad was probably starting about 4-5 minutes behind and would be chasing me. He got about 90 seconds back.
So about 34K running for the week and about 140K cycling, had planned on an easier week which it was but Friday and today were both hard runs.
890TSS week / but with two whole ârest daysâ
(I say ârestâ as we drove to the infamous eyesight test centre Oop North, then to the coast, Leeds and back home - mini holiday seeing the family. Had far too much to eat and drink
)
BBQ - Meat. Meat. Meat. Delicious

Daughters birthday - hilarious

Fathers Day - amazing
Previous weeks have been; 970, 1050, 790.
Got 12 hours in and hit all of my planned targets this week (20 mile run, 2.4 mile swim, 100 mile ride on consecutive days)
Knackered now and got a 5 hour session planned tomorrow (2km swim, 100km ride, 16km jog)
Then pick up my race bits and relaxxxxxx
âEasyâ week after a HIM and meant to be the start of a two week taper
14 hours / 987 TSS
I canât wait for this race.
Youâre going to light it up
All right I suppose but a few disappointing sessions, plus my swim looks down because of two club sessions per week instead of workouts.
Racing again next weekend but still not tapering.
An evening 15 miles across the fields with the dog. Hay fever now in full flow
3200m in the pool
4 x 400 off 7:00 (6:09 / 6:03 / 6:00 / 5:59)
4 x 100 off 1:45 (1:27 / 1:28 / 1:28 / 1:28)
4 x 200 off 3;30 ( 2:59 / 2:59 / 2:59 / 2:59)
400m Pull & paddles
11.5 hours training last week, including a crash on a ride were we were maintaining IM pace very very easily beforehand⌠another swim pb, boxing and general fitness stuff.
I had two coughing fits last week, X ray on Friday, great to see everyone racing, and going well, I just hope Iâm going to get chance to do mine.
Get after it !!
Crappy week that almost sent me to the dumps last week. Funny how fragile the ego can be in race build mode! Only managed 4hrs 15 mins, and was unable to get out at all on T, F or S. Started the week well with an easy bike & run on Mon & Tues, then a great BR brick on Wed with my longest sea swim in ages that evening. Then it went downhill. Struggled for time to get oit on Thurs, but was pretty shattered anwyay, so that was fine. Fri was starting to climb the walls, now feeling recovered, but hard day with work/kids. Sat Still feeling mega restless, but another busy day. Sun i went the other way, couldnât get out until the end of the day, but had now flipped to massive lethargy and apathy, doubled with the no training guilt as i should be in my peak 2 weeks right now plus race FOMO.
Cue the (irrational) feelings of having lost all of my hard earned fitness yada yada. Couldnât decide what to do on the Sun, like mega indeciveness. Wanted to go help my mate who was at the end of a 36 hour ultra event (RD), but then didnât at the same time as needed to âtrainâ. Forced myself out the door for an easy one just aorund home. Felt awful. Moped about feeling sorry for myself. THought iâd try to hammer an uphill see if that heklped in a make/break situation. Weirdly resulted in pure apathy. Thought i canât go home after 2km so iâll run to the beach and into the car park, see if one of the boys was still on the aid station there. Feeling all down and feeling sorry for myself.
Got to the car park just in time as they were packing up, last runner had just passed through. Friend (RDâs wife) was just about to deliver some stuff to the finish line, so i changed my mind and jumped in the car with her. Drove over to Exmouth and spent the next hour clapping the last finishers in and mucking about with 4 of my friends taht had been working the event all weeekend (they were all proper tired and broken). Mood instantly perked up (not cos my mates were knackered! haha). Great seeing the last 100 miler come over after 32 odd hours. Broken but beaming. Same for the last few 100km, 50km and 30km finishers. Really perked me up, but i was getting cold now as was just in vest and shorts.
Turned out iâd had a few stressful days with work and kids. No exercise when i wanted it. FOMO/guilt for not competing/helping at the event. Not had any mates company in about a week as everyone had been busy. All just bundled up to this mini perfect storm.
Left Exmouth feeling really refreshed and ran well home (though chest was mega tight all evening - probably hay fever related). Got home in a really good mood, ready to kick this weekâs ass! Had a good chat with Mrs GB whoâs gonna help me shuffle stuff about to get a big week in this week as my last peak week. Wedding party on Sat evening is now going ahead (though all seated/table service. no dancing etc. so may actually be really boring). But i have a plan to still get my big kit test ride in the week now as wonât be able to on Sunday.
Sorry thatâs a bit of a self indulgent/cathartic dribble/rant. But thatâs what this site is for eh!?
Well done to all the racers on the weekend!
Cracking ride with my cycle club on Saturday afternoon, up from Gorleston to Hunstanton to see the sunset, then back overnight to see the sunrise in Gorleston again. Weather was perfect on the way up with a great sunset, bit of rain on the way back at various points, then when about 10 miles from the finish it went full on biblical levels of rain, so sunrise was a bit of a letdown!
