Training - What Training?!

I think you overtook me when I was cautiously overtaking a dog that was running a bit erratically as when I looked up I could see you running off into the distance. But yes, was an easy marathon pace for me, though got a little carried away.

Starting from next week I’m going to be heading to the track every Tuesday with the local athletics club to join their middle/long distance sessions. Aim is to get my 5k, 10k & HM PBS down over the next year, and get my 10k & HM times more in line with my 5k.

Once my hip is sorted, I’m doing this. I keep talking about joining an AC and just need to do it!

I actually know the coach as drank in the same pub as him about 7 years ago (when I played darts, badly), and said I would try and go back then, and only just now finally getting round to doing it.

My in defense, I used to commute on the day the session is on, so would have been difficult to regularly commit. So working from home has helped enable this.

10 k treadmill.

A run of two half’s, this one was in miles and I messed up pacing to get to the 47:30 target first 5 k felt easy, very, the last 3 k were tough but got there 47:22.

I’ll use a km one next time.

Strange, I have a really strong upper body and core, yet I’m beyond crap at ski erg and those burpee jump things, some other stuff is going really really well.

Over 1k I’m no we’re near a 4 min ski erg, not a chance, 4:30 is doable and yet I did 12k in an hour ( 5 min per k) no problem, tough but I was always going to do it.

I’ll work on the intervals !

8 x 250mtr on 2min rest for 1:57/500 splits resisting the urge on the first few to go too fast. Then try 4 x 500mtr on 1:59/500 split with 3min rest.

The crossfit technique tends to put better numbers on the machine rather than the correct way taught by the XC Skiers.

Watching the elite race ski erg from a few weeks ago, they all look like clones from our height to the giants.

Long long strokes and bending over to engage the core / use body weight, I think I’m using my arms too much.

I have a session planned tomorrow, all ski erg.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

I’ve screen shotted the one you sent me…thanks I just fall to pieces very very quickly as soon as I hit 2:00 min per 500, it’s like a switch.

The world records are held by 2 ex rugby props. Good luck tomorrow :muscle:

that’s where us props can score highly - short sharp power stuff.

as an example for rowing, back in the day (in my late 30’s so probably beyond my peak power as well) I did 1:24 for 500m on a C2 rower.

John Fury did 1:25 for his very first timed 500 ms.

It was his second ever time on the rower.

He never went on it again, he said it was

“ an awful contraption “

Big John knows his stuff !
