Training - What Training?!

On the plus side, social media keeps them away from forums like this.

Just leave IMJ; it’s wasted energy.

I like it.

Full of nutters, hero’s and loons.

I think a few didn’t understand your post MS.

Signing for an Ironman as a non swimmer is a bit daft, I was amazed at how many actually did that.

I’m swimming out of my skin at the min…?!
Extra weight?!
But I’m still slow and scared to swim in the sea.

I wouldn’t leave if you don’t want too.

2 x 8km treadmill sessions at 5.25 pace

I haven’t frequented IMJ for ages, and it was only brief. But it sounds like the levels of ‘entitlement’ and ‘snowflakery’ are high?

I think it’s become a bit like a 220 magazine subscription. You try it for a bit, then go ‘no’.

Huge one and done population and because people have completed full distance races from cut off to 11… ish times, in often quite extraordinary circumstances…

Often previously been non swimmers… there not there non adult life non swimmers … this becomes normal and is not to be frowned upon Or critiqued in any way …

I think several people got on the wrong end of matts post and pack mentality took over.

It’s a bit of a strange site but I’ve met several people who I actually train with on it.

It’s more personal than here, which is not good

Which I always find strange on FB, as people generally post using their name :man_facepalming:

Bit creepy when they are going on LinkedIn etc., I’m fairly careful about posting online these days, read various things about potential employers etc looking at social media profiles. Also seen various software products that do that kind of tracking.

God knows what they’d think if they looked at mine though

Jeff

I am pretty aware that anything I post could be read by an employer, however, employers are only concerned about things that could damage them or their brand, so long as you are moderately sensible, its not an issue. I not worried about my employer reading the IMJ post… in fact I am pretty sure that my advice is pretty consistent with any sensible manager

Guy who was a Royal Marine, non swimmer 6 months before IM wales, and then swam 1:09 (I looked it up) - must have had a great swim coach

2 Triathlon coaches telling me that it is fine for a non swimmer to take on an IM… Touting for business? Pretty sure that this would not be advised by a sensible coach, unless they had personal knowledge of the athlete and their situation

What you do not hear is the countless IMJers who do this and fail

By definition, such a thing doesn’t exist. Technically.

Apparently only breastroke, while carrying a pack

I just borrowed the wife’s phone to look at IMJ. Hilarious. Favourite comment was from the lass who tried to use a fairly spurious maths analogy, but got her sums wrong. Wonderful stuff.

I did the course nearly 30 years ago.
The swimming test doesn’t require Ali’s swim speed but you won’t pass if your a non swimmer.

Slot of them mean they haven’t swum to the extent that they now feel they can’t

Matt you displayed exemplary restraint as even after you explained yourself the “ biff” carried on.

I’ve seen you give good Realistic advice concerning all aspects of our sport.

Some of the people commenting have been members for a few years and yet don’t seem to have raced… at all…!

A pt from our gym did IMUK as his first ever tri…?!

He has since really embraced the sport and started sprint, oly, half and full.

He just wanted a full distance race to be his first tri… this is quite common now …

But he could swim! He went 1:18 but will end up much much faster than that… he’s 6 ft 5!

I posted after you that you won’t see all the people who paid and didn’t learn to swim…

Storm in a teacup, keep the faith, it’s a good site.

I had to read that twice…!

Being honest I still didn’t get it.

I re-read my original post, am I missing something, it doesn’t seem to be particularly controversial. I agree with your point above, I think that there are certain areas on IMJ where you must not go.

I may float it past ST’ers to see what reaction it gets there

The sad thing is that IMJ is probably the main source of information for people looking to take on an Ironman. They probably find TT, look at the posts here and rule us out as elitist twats (Insult sourced from IMJ.

For people who have found us recently, some of us are elitist twats, but you are much more likely to find sound advice.

I read it three times thinking I had missed something.

Some individuals may have read certain parts and gone balls out on the keyboard…!

At the end of the day if a first timer said I want to do an Ironman but can’t swim, me you and coach Joe would advice them to learn before they shelled out £500 +.

Without wishing to seem elitist with adequate training and prep most people could have a shot at a 17 hour finish.
Providing they can swim!

I’ve only ever seen one guy go from breast stroker to 1:03? Ish in 7-8 months but he ran a 2:42 at London the year before,so obviously had some pedigree.

Be a shame if you left the site, your unusual in that your not young but seem to be getting faster…

I’m defiantly getting slower but have only done a slow AF full distance course!
